How do we get to the filter to wash it

What is your model number. Some dishwashers don't have filters they have grinders and or "choppers" that grind the food and materials. If yours has a chopper then you more than likely do not have a filter

Where is the filter on a kitchenaid dishwasher#kuds35fxss9 ?

There is a water inlet filter at the inlet valve. The dishwasher has what is known as a food disposer waste system. It has stainless steel blades which actually grind the food particles and then drains them with the water.

Dishwasher hums intermitantly and after the wash cycle is completed

Sounds like you have a bearing going out. It could be in the system pump or the rotating washing arms. I would suggest getting ahold of Kitchenaid's customer support and relay when during which cycle the noise occurs and they should be able to identify whats going wrong.

Our ten year old kitchenaid dishwasher doesn't get the dishes clean. there is food particles left on dishes if we don't completely rinse our dishes. is there a cleanout filter that needs to be emptied?

Locate your dishwasher's filter. It is typically on the floor of the dishwasher. Pull out the bottom rack and look along the bottom of the dishwasher until you find it.

Use a paper towel or sponge to remove any residue or debris that has accumulated on the outside of the filter once you locate it. On some dishwashers, the filter area does not detach or open, so your hand cleaning will stop here. On other models, you can unscrew the filter housing to access the inside and clean any debris from the filter area. Simply wash out the filter using soap and water, then reassemble once cleaning is complete.

Further clean the filter area by pouring a quart of white vinegar into the bottom of the empty dishwasher. Turn to a wash cycle and allow the dishwasher to run with the vinegar cleaning the mechanisms, including the filter.

To deep-clean your dishwasher and the filter periodically, mix the following ingredients together in a bowl, then pour into the bottom of the dishwasher: 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup bleach. Let the mixture sit in the bottom of the empty dishwasher overnight. The next morning run a wash cycle, letting the bleach mixture clean and disinfect the dishwasher thoroughly.

Water is not coming out of the top water jets for dishwasher

What is the model of this KitchenAid diswasher and approximatly how old is it? On some newer, energy saving models water is alternated from lower to upper spray arms. But ...
Remove filter that is in the sump area beneath the lower dish rack. Screws will need to be removed to open the area up. Look for blockages and clean filter.
Reassemble and test. If problems remain, it is probably a failing pump motor and will require a service call.
