I have similar problem. I found that if I remove the outer casing (disconnect from mains supply first) and disconnect the DVD cable to the units circuit board then power up again it would clear the problem, but on reconnecting it then trying again the ‘Welcome’ message returned as before. I’m guessing it’s a problem with the DVD drive or its connection. The only other thing I have noticed is, if you do manage to clear the ‘Welcome’ message and leave the unit switched on with the standby button the unit works as normal.

I have a Sony RDR-VX30. But Now it will not open nor eject. I asked to Sony service center in Kathmandu, Nepal, they said that may be the problem of board. If so how can I solve this problem? or if any solution please let me know. Thank you. RajuKathmandu, NepalEmail: email@example.com
i have a sony HXD-1065 which was doing exactly the same thing. i searched loads of forums to get some idea of the cause but nothing. to cut a long story short, i put the recorder away in a cupboard for approx 4 months then just as i was about to list it on ebay as faulty i thought i'd just switch it on and see what happens and it came on and loaded up as it should with no problem so i unplugged it and plugged it back in several times to see if the permanent welcome message came back but it just loaded and has worked perfect for the last 5 or 6 months. i found out later that the memory capacitor needs to fully discharge before it can reset itself on power-up. i'm not sure exactly how long this takes but it took me 4 months to find it works again.
Well while the unit is on and the Welcome is frozen push and hold in the power on button for about 15 seconds or so until the power goes off. Then release the power button. The unit will go on and the Welcome will eventually blink and the unit will eventually cycle into power off with just the clock showing. Then unplug the power and wait, unplugged for a few days to let the memory capacitor discharge..... If further you have the same problem then you need to repair it....... Please post comments for further help or information...........
I've had the same problem. I've actually unplugged the unit and it's been unplugged for probably about two weeks. When I reconnected the power this morning the problem persisted where the DVD Recorder was stuck on the Welcome Screen. As a last ditch effort I pressed and held the power button for 10 to 15 seconds until the word "Welcome" dissapeard of the screen and back on. This seems to have reset the unit. I know I should have tried this a long time ago. So much for reading the instruction manual! I'm just glad it's working again!
Hold down the power button for about 5 seconds to turn off the unit. Pull the DVD door down, and use a paper clip to turn the white gear counter clockwise. The DVD tray should come out after about 5 full revolutions of the gear. Press the open button to reset the unit.
