Check your wiring between the contactor and compressor for a short to ground, or check the compressor windings for short to ground.
With the Tstat off, the contactor should be open so the only way for the compressor to be trying to do anything is if the 110 volts from the unbroken side are traveling through the compressor to ground. Since 110v is not enough to run it, the overload is kicking it out, cooling off, and repeating the cycle. When you kick on the Tstat, the contactor is supplying voltage directly to ground without going through the resistence of the compressor windings and kicking the breaker.

Blank screen sounds like a fried thermosat. Abrupt outages can affect certain types of thermostats. Make a jumper wire and jump across R and G. See if you get any action from anywhere. If a fan or compressor kicks in you know you have a burned out thermosat...

SOURCE: Breaker keeps tripping
If breaker won't hold compressor is not going bad it is. A simple way to chech your breaker: Make sure breaker is off. Turn power off at outside disconnect. Disconnect the high voltage leads from the incoming at the contactor. Wire nut them. Turn the breaker back on. If it stays engaged you know its not the breaker and you confirm it is the compressor....

Use your cellphone or any digital camera as your eyes by pointing the camera to the remote control transmitter. Light should emits on the remote control receiver. If no lights means defective remote control. But if lights emits means that either the receiver board or the main board is defective.
Try also the rst or reset button if present. Reset and try the remote.
