IBM Thinkpad R51 screen blacked out

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad model R51 laptop. It's worked great for 2 years. Today, I was using it and suddenly, without warning (or symptoms) the screen went black. The computer didn't shut off, the screen went black. I tried turning it off and rebooting several times with no luck. The machine comes on (cuz the led lights come on, and you can hear the motor running), but the screen stays black. Does this mean the backlighting suddenly burned out? It never dimmed or even blinked prior to the "blackout".

The problem
1 The LCD screen is out or

your battery could be failing, thats the most obvious thing. Then you might have accidentaly set the sleep mode,if you have this facility in your software(most pc's do).you must just search through your soft to see if you have enabled this function--good luck!

A blank screen on ibm thinkpad R51

your wires connecting from your laptop hardware to your display is messed up and is only "re-connected" and "hot-wired" by your action of closing/opening the lid.... use your warranty... your problem is when your warranty is expired so be glad this happened when you still have warranty

R51 Thinkpad Monitor Problems

To answer your question Morgan, yes you can get a new LCD display for your laptop! Typically people sell the entire assembly which is the screen, backlight, display cable. It then fits into the thin plastic casing around your current screen. They are actually pretty easy to replace the problem is you oftentimes have to remove the computers keyboard, and other pieces of plastic on the top that might be in the way. Also there are usually anchoring screws on the bottom that have to be removed as well. There should be one little teeny tiny cable you have to pull out that connects to the mainboard, and then reconnect with the new display. Try this website if you want to order a new one their price is only $120 (which is great for a new LCD screen).
