Sony vaio audio driver problem

Hi,

im working on a sony vaio vfg840 w laptop, and the audio drivers are driving me insane. im working with a clean install of XP SP2. after trying for an hour without success to get the thing to play audio, i formatted the machine and started over. i downloaded all the drivers fresh from the sony website....everything else seems to work fine. i run the executable for the Realtek High Definition Audio, and it installs. I can go to device manager and see the device loads with no conflicts. the realtek volume control / settings app loads in the tray. everything looks fine - but i max out all the volumes, toggle the speakers on and off, plug in headphones, speakers, you name it....and no audio! i don't know whats wrong. the guy whos laptop it is swears the speakers have worked before, im not ready to blame hardware just yet. anyone else have this problem?

If not anything open the system and check the connections sounds like you have hit on everything else besides that

Sony vaio wont boot up same way each time after clean install

Do you have the proper Sony drivers for it? Get them all at the Sony website. Reinstall like this: Use a disk wiping tool to clean the entire Hard drive before installing anything on it again Wipe drive is a good one to use. After the disk is totally cleaned, Install windows xp. You can use the quick format for the drive when windows ask to format if you like. Then follow all of the windows prompts to install the OS. After its finished installing and you get the desktop up don't install all the drivers you downloaded from the Sony site, if you do it will mess things up! Install ONLY the missing ones. Go to Start, right click on my computer, select manage. Then click on device manager, open each menu and see which drivers are still missing (look for yellow question marks) install only the missing drivers. Many times you download 20 drivers but you may only use 4 or 5. After all are installed reboot and it should work fine. NOTE: Sony drivers like all other ones are not identified as to their use, just given weird numbers. When downloading them they are listed under each category like audio, mouse, etc, but after you get them you still won't know which one does what. I download one at a time then rename it adding the function to the last part of the name so I know what its for and I can easily get the driver I need, when I need it.
