Where can I find a bolt for a remington model 600 .243 caliber rifle

Is the bolt lost or or broken?

It may be difficult to find a standalone bolt, but .243 is based on the .308 cartridge so any caliber that is based on the .308 will work: .243, .260, .308, 7mm-08, etc, etc, etc.

If the bolt is simply damaged, it may be easier to repair it than to replace it.

Check Numerich. They're currently listed as sold out on their site, but it might be worth making a phone call and checking with them to see if they have any or can get one.

Also, check gunbroker listings regularly. It's unlikely that you'll find just a bolt, but you might be able to locate a good 'donor gun', and then part out the rest of it.

You'll still want to be sure and have a competent gunsmith check headspacing after you replace the bolt, just to ensure that they are a safe combination. Any time you replace a bolt you need to check headspace. If the headspacing isn't correct, a good smith will be able to set it correctly with a small amount of machine work.

I own a Remington 742 rifle , serial " 229608 . I want to know the facts or history of this gun .

Ricky, here is a link to the history of the Remington 742:
http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/journals/Model_74N

This paragraph has the most pertinent information:

"The Model 742 serial number sequence was changed on November 26, 1968 as a result of the 1968 Gun Control Act that required no two guns from the same manufacturer have the same serial number. The initial Model 742 serial number sequence began at 1001 and ended at 396562. The new serial number sequence, now shared with the Model 760 pump-action rifle, began at 6900000"

After market trigger for Rem 742

You can try this spring from erniethegunsmith:
http://erniethegunsmith.com/catalog/i36.html

Or the 870 Trigger Fix from Timney:
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=32078/Product/REM-870-1100-11-87-TRIGGER-FIX

The 742 is an old gun. Not much made for it now.

I just bought a Remington Model 742 Woodsmaster 30-06 at a large gunshow and noticed later that the bolt handle is only about 1/4 of an inch long, so it must have broken off at one point. Surely it was...

To remove the bolt, look at where the trigger enters the stock. There should be a little square/rectangle button right in front of it (inside the trigger guard, right in front of the trigger). Push that in and while holding it in, pull the bolt backwards (out). The bolt should come out pretty easy if you're holding the button in. Most gun shops can order a new bolt. Likewise, many of them carry diagrams/manuals or can get them for you. You may also find one online for free if you hunt/peck enough. I'm not sure about the plastic piece you are referring to. My Remington is steel all the way. No plastic on the bolt anywhere. The other option is to take the bolt to Cabela's or another gunsmith. Most of them (if they are competent) can repair the broken piece cheaper than buying a new bolt. They can also tell you if the plastic is normal. Just drop by with it and have them take a peek. estimates (and telling you if the plastic is normal) are usually free.
