The wire to on/off switch came off don't know how to wire back , that was after i took power supply out .I thought it was bad . The computer will not boot up or turn on now please help

That wire is usually held on by hot glue to the front panel power switch. depending on what case you have. you might be able to just slip it back on or solder it. it doesn't matter which way you connect them as they are just being shorted when you hit the button.

Gateway DX4822-01 power switch problems


The front of your computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front Panel header.

Main wires such as Power On LED, Power On switch, HarDDrive activity LED, and Reset switch; IF used.

Suggest KEEP track of where those wires go!

Make a drawing, and notes. I even use a magic marker, (Sharpee?), and make a notation of the Front Panel header pinout, on the floor of the computer case.

In this particular case it isn't known if the Power On switch is the problem, or the Power Supply.

Power On switch;
Power UNPLUGGED to computer, Anti-Static Precautions FOLLOWED; (Don't know? Post back in a Comment),

Remove the twisted pair of W/B and W/G wires, to the Power On switch pins, in the Front Panel header.

Plug power back into computer.
Use a small flat tipped screwdriver, and touch the two Power On switch pins. (Jewelers screwdriver works well for this application)

Power Supply comes on? Bad Power On switch.
Allow Windows to fully load, run for a few minutes; then turn the computer off normally.

Jump the two Power On switch pins again.
Power Supply comes on? You DEFINITELY have a bad Power On switch.

Power Supply does NOT come on?
We will go to a further diagnostic test then.
Awaiting results for first test, then we will go on.

I stopped using my acer aspire l100 when I got a laptop. I wanted to use it again so the other day I hooked it up and I got nothing. There is no light on the computer and the power will not switch on. My...


First things first if you put the wrong RAM in it would still turn on but it would beep at you. If the front switch isn't sticking I doubt it is that. You can test it by following the wires from the switch to the motherboard, disconnect the wires and use a flat screw driver to make contact between the two pins or if more pins make contact between the + and -, if it turns on then yeah it's the switch. The small 3v battery is only used to save your BIOS settings.
Lastly, yes it most likely is the power supply. I'd really just start with the power supply as it is the most common component to go out.

My motherboard is getting power from a 450w smps coz the board LED gets on when I switch on the ups. But pressing the power button on the cabinet does not switch on the system. Please help!!!!


From your diagnoses you may have a bad Power On switch, or a bad Power Supply.

Reasoning?

An ATX power on switch is connected to the motherboard's Front Panel header.
From there the circuit is continued through the ATX main power cable, and into the Power Supply.

The Power On switch connects the Soft Power On wire, to Ground.
(The Soft Power On wire is abbreviated as PS_ON. The wire is Green)


If the Power On switch is bad the Power Supply will not turn on.


A bad Power Supply will have a weak voltage power rail, (Or more than one)
Enough power to light LED lights, and perhaps spin fans, but not enough power to turn the Processor on.
No Processor operating, no computer.

1) If all of the LED lights were on at once, they would use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.

3) A typical Processor can use from 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is.
(Older Intel Pentium III's, and comparative AMD processors used less than 51 Watts)

You may have enough power to light that LED light, but not enough to spin fans, or turn the Processor on.


There is a simple test to see if the problem is the Power On switch, or the Power Supply.
Bypass the Power On switch.

A jumper wire is used to temporarily connect the Soft Power On wire to ANY Ground wire.
The connection is made at the Back of the ATX main power cable's connector, with the ATX main power cable plugged into the motherboard, and computer plugged into power.

1) The Asus M2N-MX (And SE version) motherboard uses a 24-pin ATX main power cable.

This is one example of a 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

Looking at the photo to the far right, shows the 24-pin ATX main power cable plugged into the motherboard.
This is the position for the test.
(Computer also plugged into power)

The BACK of the connector is where the wires go into the connector.
The jumper wire is used on the Back side of the connector.

One end of the jumper wire goes down into the socket hole with the Green wire.
(Soft Power On wire)
The other end of the jumper wire goes down into ANY socket hole with a Black wire in it.
ALL Black wires are Ground wires.

The jumper wire goes down into the socket hole RIGHT NEXT TO the existing wire.
The jumper wire MUST go down into the socket hole far enough to touch a metal terminal.

At the end of every wire going down into the ATX main power cable's connector, is a metal terminal.
The metal terminal is pretty far down in the socket hole.

The preferred jumper wire used is a paper clip.
The paper clip's diameter is small enough, to go right next to the existing wire in the socket hole, and touch the metal terminal.

The paper clip is straightened out, then bent into a U-shape.
The 'legs' of the U-shape go down into the two socket holes.
The middle is wrapped with a few wraps of black plastic electrical tape.
The taped area is for your finger, and thumb to hold onto.

The voltage is 5 Volts DC.
Two D cell flashlight batteries produce 3 Volts DC.
There may be a small spark when you make the connection, advising you in advance.

The connection made is no longer than 2 seconds.
(The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch)

Computer comes on, (Power Supply actually) you know you have a bad Power On switch.
Computer does Not come on, you know you have a bad Power Supply.

It wont turn on


It look that you have problems with the power supply. Try to remove the power cable, and the press the power button for 10 seconds. Then connect the power cable again and try to power up finally. If this doesn't work you should replace it with a working one, or take your pc desktop to a service center. Regards, MaTi_FleSh

I have the same model computer and had the same issue. There are a couple of things to check out with both being fairly simple. If possible go ahead and replace the power cord just making sure to replace it with a cord of the same specs which could come from another device such as a printer. The next area to check out is inside the case and here you just want to remove any dust build up and make sure to clean the fan at the power supply. To open the case you only need to remove the two thumb screws on the back side opposite the power cord then pull the side towards you and it will pop off. To clean it you can use a can of compressed air to blow it out, there really shouldn't be any need to disconnect or remove anything. This should prevent it from shutting down and not powering up.

1) Check to make sure THE receptacle in the surge protector that the computer is plugged into, is good.
I have had a few surge protectors where just THAT receptacle was bad.

("Hmmm, monitor, router, and printer has power from the surge protector." Checked the receptacle in the surge protector that the computer was plugged into, with a table lamp, found THAT receptacle was bad)

2) Receptacle in surge protector proves to be good?
Suggest performing the test to see if the problem is the Power On switch, or the Power Supply.
(The Power On switch is located inside the plastic Power On button)

The test involves bypassing the Power On switch, by using a jumper wire on the Soft Power On, in the ATX main power cable's connector.
Has nothing to physically do with the switch itself.

Using the jumper wire the computer (Power Supply) comes on?
Problem is the Power On switch.

Suggest you see if the problem is the Power On switch, or the Power Supply.

(First check to see if the receptacle in the surge protector, that the computer is plugged into, has power.
Have had a few bad surge protectors, where just THAT receptacle was bad.

No power cannot turn on


Suggest you check the simple stuff first.

Not checking is akin to a car that won't start, and tearing apart the entire fuel system, only to find it was just out of gas.

1) Make sure the receptacle the surge protector is plugged into, has power. Surge protector Power On light should be lit.

2) Check THE receptacle in the surge protector, that the computer itself, is plugged into.
Have had a number of expense surge protectors, where just THAT receptacle was bad.

("Hmmm, surge protector Power On LED light is lit. Monitor, printer, sound system, and router plugged into the surge protector has power. Should be good to go.

NOT!
Plug a table lamp, or similar device into THAT receptacle.
Make SURE it has power)

Surge protector, and receptacle in surge protector checks out?
Bypass the Power On switch.

See if the problem is a $5 Power On switch, or the Power Supply.

In order to guide you in this procedure, I need to know the computer manufacturer name, and Model Number.

On a desktop computer this will be located on the Back of the computer tower, (Next to the Windows product key), or up on the side of the tower.
Some models have it where there is a door you open in the front, and the product number, or model number is located there.
