SOURCE: this deck is in protect mode

A couple things may cause this:
If a speaker wire shorted out (either a voice coil or the wire itself is grounded; touches the vehicles chassis ground)
Solution: disconnect each speaker from the deck and see if it turns back on. 90% of the time thats the problem.

It could be overheating.

SOURCE: Kenwood KDC-MP732 CD Player in protect mode how do

Protect Mode (Blink): The speaker wire has a short-circuit or touches the chassis of the vehicle, and then the protection function is activated.

Solution: Wire or insulate the speaker cable properly and press the reset button.

Here is a copy of the Instruction Manual for the Kenwood KDC-X790 and KDC-MP732.

Kenwood kdc-148 is in protect mode why?

A car audio component like an amplifier (or in this case a headunit) is most likely to go into protection mode when there is a short in one of the speaker outputs-- in other words, if the + and - ends of one of the speaker leads are touching, this can cause damage to the internal amplifier of the unit. Some units will respond by putting the amplifier into "protection" mode, so that it does not damage itself. Check connections on the back of your unit, or take it back to the shop that installed it.

We just installed the Kenwood KDC-X692 in our 1993 BMW 740il. The tuner works, but the CD has no sound and the AUX doesn't work either. I'm also confused on the bluetooth ready but lack of instructions...

i'm assuming you are going through an amplifier. if so it sounds like you are using the blue wire instead of the blue/white wire to turn the amplifier on. i can't really help you with the bluetooth though.

Deck shuts off, when loud, while idling or at stop lights.

You are working your deck to hard, it is overheating and shutting down (protection mode) You like it loud, you will need a 4 channel amp. Also check the ground on your deck to ensure it has a nice connection.

Kenwood new sterio shuts off when turning up volume

You may have a short in a speaker. Check to see that the wire terminals on the speaker itself aren't touching any metal. Even 1 terminal touching metal will cause issues. Hope this helps.

Security Code for Protect mode

Turn on the car so the radio is flashing "Protect." Look on the front / removable face of the stereo. On it you will find a small round hole - that's a reset button. Find a small paper clip, unfold the clip and stick it gently into the hole. The "Protect" will stop flashing, and Kenwood will be displayed. Unfortunately all your settings/presets will be gone, but at least the stereo is working again!
