these are common for doing this ,if you dont want to pull it down and hone the cyl. then i would use a heavier oil say 20w/50and that will probabley solve your problem

Well, I'm no Briggs expert, but I'm wondering if the spark is inconsistent or weak. Have you checked the gap? Also, you might try taking the plug out but leaving the wire on it, lashing the base to something grounded, using bare wire, and then turn it over while looking to see how bright the spark is.

I suspect these no longer use a magneto and/or points, which they did when I learned about them, so I won't try to guess what else might be wrong with the ignition. Still, it would be very quick to check for loose wires, condition of the spark plug wire, etc. I guess most of them are probably under the flywheel, though.

I'm just mentioning the above because they are easy to check. Might as well do that stuff first. I guess it's just as possible the mixture is off or something, but that's more work.

SOURCE: 18hp twin cylinder Briggs & Stratton backfire

Check to see if the carb is clean, if so the anti diesel value could not be working. Apply 12 volts to value and see if it move's. If that works then you may what to check the fuel pump and see if it pumps. After you tried all that then you may have change the main jet size because these engines come with a small jet for the EPA.

I have a briggs and stratton 18 hp vanguard mod 356447 that will not start when trying to start it backfires through the carb, It seems to have good spark on both cyclinders using a sprak plug test light....

I would still say it's a timing issue. Check the spark plug leads go to the correct cylinders. Was there a woodruf key locating the flywheel and did you replace it? Check points and any cams or anything to do with the ignition.

My briggs and stratton 18 hp vanguard model 356447 will not start just back fires through the carb. I have good comprssion and spark at both plugs. I replaced the flywheel key as thought the backfireing...

check intake valves for proper seating. If the valves do not close completely it will allow the engine to backfire thru the carb. Another possibility is internal timing caused by the misalignment of the timing gears between the crankshaft and cam gears.

My B&S 18hp Intec engine on my lawn tractor will not start but it will backfire??? Will not run

You may get lucky and have a sheared keyway on the flywheel . Just a lil off can make a big difference on timing.

Engine won't start and backfires

Did you loosen the coil when you changed the key? Check the setting between the flywheel and the coil. !0,000ths, I think.

sounds like its running too rich on fuel. try turning the fuel mixture screw in 1/4 turn at a time til it starts to stall then turn out 1/4 turn or 2 and see if that helps.Maybe when you used the air it turned this screw???

Do you need to remove the flywheel to change the starter gear in a briggs md. 46107 engine?

No you should not, I just did this on model 917-254722 18HP and I used an open ended 1/2" wrench and the hard to reach bolt goes into the empty underside of the flywheel. Plus if you did it's a lot more than just freeing the bold, you may have to force out a safty pin and get a flywheel puller

CHANGED THE SPARK PLUG , HAD THE BATTERY CHARGED, ALL I GET WHEN I TURN THE KEY ON IS A HALF HEARTED ATTEMPT FOR THE FLYWHEEL TO TURN. ITS A BRIGGS AND STRATTON 18HP INTEK

Check your battery connections and connections to your starter. Try jumping the starter directly with a jumper cable. If it turns over quickly then you have either a bad battery or bad connections.

If it won't turn over with a direct boost to the starter, you need starter and or solenoid work.

Hope this helps!
