Question about Maytag MDE2600 Electric Dryer

Open Question

Maytag Dryer runs & runs & runs....

I have a Maytag Ensignia Electric Dryer (model MDE4658AYW). It had the LED membrane w/ a knob that controls the timer settings. When you first start the dryer, the LED is set on the particular setting you selected, but after 10 seconds, all the LED's light up & the dryer continuously runs. I'm thinking I've narrowed the problem down to either the main circuit board in the control panel or the LED membrane itself. My thinking behind that is if the LED I selected stays selected, then the timer will do as it's told. The circuit board is a shy over $100 & I can't even find a price on the LED membrane. Am I walking down the right path on this? If so, what part would be best to fix? (I would prefer to avoid the method of fixing one & then fixing the next. Seems a bit remedial.) Thanks in advance.

Warning! To avoid personal injury or even death, always disconnect your appliance from its power source--that is, unplug it or break the connection at the circuit breaker or fuse box--before you do any troubleshooting or repair work on your appliance. Also, because some components may have sharp edges, use caution while working on your appliance.

This link, http://www.repairclinic.com/SmartSearch/SmartSearch.aspx, provides exploded view imagery, belt routing diagrams, parts imagery and function, parts ordering and shipping information, error code details, just about anything you need to get your appliance up and running again. Just follow the links to navigate through the site.

You will need to enter the model number stamped on the manufacturers product information data tag, located on the unit, and not in the User’s Manual. to access your product information.

Here are some common solutions to help resolve the issue with your appliance:

If your dryer seems to run forever, it could be because of a clogged vent or internal ductwork. Your dryer may have an automatic cycle that turns off the dryer when the clothes are dry. It does this with a special thermostat or moisture-sensing system.

Normally, this is what happens during an automatic cycle:

  • The thermostat tells the dryer to heat until the interior of the dryer reaches a pre-set temperature--say 135 degrees.

  • When the dryer reaches the pre-set temperature, the thermostat tells the timer to begin advancing. (If there's a moisture sensor, the timer advances only if the moisture content of the clothing is low enough.)

  • The timer advances until the interior cools, then the thermostat tells the timer to stop advancing, and tells the dryer to start heating again.

This cycle continues until the clothes are dry. But…if the vent is clogged, the dryer may never reach the proper operating temperature, so it doesn't send the signal to the timer and the dryer continues to run indefinitely, even if the clothes are completely dry. To fix the problem, clean the vent and/or internal ductwork.

Possible causes for your issue include:

Blown fuse
Timer or motor inoperative
Housing wiring not properly connected to dryer
Bad door switch
Faulty "Push to Start" switch

It would probably be best to have a professional pinpoint the exact defect.

Try Googling " user manual for Maytag Ensignia MDE4658AYW ". You may have to go to the Maytag web site and ask for manual. Sometimes I've had to ask for repair manual instead of user manual. Good luck.

I had a squirrel(?) stuck in mine! I removed the lint pipe and it was really nasty. Something had chewed through the screen and climbed down the pipe to stay warm?? We live in Minnesota and it was cold as heck. Anyway, Have a shop vac ready, I hope this helps. Remove pipe at the dryer, push start a couple of times and see if anything blows out. K.J.
