One of the reasons for your PC shutting down is that the cable connector is shorten inside, some aftermarket cables do that. The other problem can be in your camera: a virus. Best antivrus program Kaspersky Lab, scan your camera. But first try another cable, buy another cable on ebay for a dollar or two. Another problem can be in your camera's output terminal to check this try your AV cable and watch pics on TV, if you see the screen on the TV, your terminal is good, check the cable first

Why my Nikon Coolpix L26 isnt uploading to computer via usb to PC

When you connect the USB cable from the camera to the PC, the camera should shut down. If it doesn't perhaps your cable is defect. Or one of the connectors, from the camera or from the PC.
When the cable works on another PC (or Laptop) you can assume the cable is good. But then the USB connector in the PC could be not connected, or the USB controller in the PC is not working correct.
Sure you did install the Nikon software on the PC to?

What sftware is needed for the coolpix s4100 to transfer pictures to my computer?

You don't need any special software.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa or Nikon Transfer.

I need to download a driver for my Nikon Coolpix 4100 since I can't find my CD.

You can download the current versions of all (free) Nikon software from
http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61

You might want to consider NOT connecting the camera to the computer.

Did you install the drivers to the computer? And install the nikon software to your computer? If you didn't that is probably your problem. Otherwise you can get a cardreader and use it to get your photos on you computer.
