Point 6 update the firmware - some routers won't operate on windows 8 until you log into the router and upgrade it.
Also you may want to select an actual channel number rather than set to auto as you can increase channel number by 3 to avoid interference from neighbours.

Upgrade firmware on NETGEAR router.

Many a times, it is required that you upgrade the firmware on your NETGEAR for it to function properly and be equipped with the latest updates and feature offered by NETGEAR.

I have listed the specific steps which are required to upgrade firmware on most of the NETGEAR

A. Open the router page using the following way:

1. Connect a computer to the router using any one of the 4 available ports.
2. Open the browser(Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox).
3. Access the router, usually with http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://www.routerlogin.com.
4. Login to the router with the Username as "admin" and Password as "password" (please note that the username and password is case sensitive. In case you have changed the password for router login then you need to use that one).

B. Visit the following link to download the latest firmware.

http://kb.netgear.com/app/

Type the model make of your NETGEAR router and it will show you the download page for that specific product.

C. Please follow the steps to upload the firmware of the router:

1. Open the router page using the steps as mentioned under step A.
2. Under Maintenance, click router Upgrade.
3. Click Browse and locate the upgrade file.
4. Click Upload.
5. Wait for the router to reboot.
6. Click on 'Logout' (at the bottom of the list) from left menu.

It is recommended that you reset and then reconfigure your router for the firmware to upload properly.

NOTE: Please upgrade the firmware on a computer connected wired to your router. Upgrading firmware on a wireless computer may cause your router to malfunction and can lead your router to be in an unusable state.

These steps will succesfully allow you to upgrade firmware on your NETGEAR router.

Wifi connection always seems to be unstable. Even if I'm standing beside router or anywhere else signed in to wifi. Even if connection says it's very strong. it keeps dropping out and I have to keep...

Did you get a custom ROM on the device? It looks that you have improper modem software installed. If not then please check with your carrier if there any upgrades available and install them. But, before doing that I'd highly recommend do a backup of all your personal data and then perform factory reset with the cash cleaning (internal and Dalvik).

WIRELESS OUT OF RANGE

Move closer. That's not always an option though. Here are some tips to improve the range of wireless routers:

1) Locate the router higher in the building rather than lower (1st or second floor is better than a basement location).

2) Place the router in a location that will offer the least resistance to the signals - it is easier to pass wifi signals through gypsum board than it is for concrete / brick or walls with aluminum siding on them.

3) Change the antenna(s) on the router to a type that offers more gain. Typical router omni directional antennas offer 3dB to 5dB or gain - there are others that offer 7 dB or more of omnidirectional gain for reasonable prices. The antenna gain works for both transmit from and receive to the router.

4) if the device you wirsh to connect to the router is in one place, consider a directional Yagi antenna. These antennas concentrate the entire wifi signal in a direction that is 30 degrees wide and can allow the signal to be seen 5, 6 or even more times further in one direction - instead of being spread out over 360 degrees. These antennas cost a little more, but can solve the problem quickly.

5) Replace the manufacturer's stock firmware of selected routers with a 3rd party type such as DD-WRT or Tomato. Either of these will work with your Linksys WRT54G router. One of the benefits is the ability to boost output power of the wifi radio in the new settings the firmware offers. Read about both and decide if either is something you're comfortable doing.

6) Add additional wifi routers configured as a bridge or an access point to extend the wifi signal into an underserved area. DD-WRT supports bridging as shown here.

I hope this helps & good luck!

TP-Link TL-WR642G recovery after failure upgrade to latest firmware

may find this page helpful. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php...om_a_Bad_Fl ash Its not for the TP-Link router but the same principle could be applied to you with the correct firmware. Its worked for me on more than a few occasions. Providing you can ping the router via a lan cable then the chances of recovering it are very high.

Wireless not working

If you can detect the wireless network but you cannot connect to it, check the following:

1. Be sure that you are typing the correct network key (WEP, WPA-PSK).
2. If the wireless is unsecured, but still you can't connect to it, try to change the wireless channel.
3. Try to power cycle the router (disconnect the power cord from the wall socket for 5 minutes, then plug it back in).
4. Reboot the computer and try to turn off / on the WiFi of your laptop.
5. Reconfigure the router's wireless settings.
6. If same problem occur, contact the manufacturer and have them upgrade the firmware of your router.

If you cannot detect the wireless network, try the following:

1. Power cycle the router for 5 minutes.
2. Reboot the computer and try to turn off / on the WiFi of your laptop.
3. Change the angle of the router's antenna.
4. Change the wireless channel.
5. Reconfigure the router's wireless settings.
6. Upgrade the firmware of your router.

If nothing happens, then the router could be defective. Contact the manufacturer for RMA.

Good luck!

Acer 5720 wireless connection

Miss_isis,

try the following : ( for testing)

disable the security and see if u can stay online longer
if u can , the passpharse or keypairs are wrong ( or in some cases the router or WNIC does not support key rotations (cisco)
or the key might be messed up..

Disable mac filtering .. ( for testing)

upgrade the router firmware ( be sure to backup the old firmware first and document your settings because upgrading firmware will set the router device back to the factory default)
