Will my fixmestick remove malware/viruses/etc. from an external hard drive that's plugged into my laptop at the same time that it's cleaning the laptop?

Hi James,

I work at FixMeStick. Yes, you can scan an external hard drive using the FixMeStick. Just insert the external hard drive into your computer before you start a scan and keep it plugged in during the scan, and the FixMeStick will scan it in addition to your computer.

What on my comp is using all my data

It's easy to get malware, junkware and viruses when you say "yes" to popups and emails. I learned a few tricks about cleaning up my computer, and my favorite tool is the FixMeStick.

I bought an "open box" computer from a store that was loaded up with malware as you describe. In fact, it took me a week to finally get it all cleaned up. Every time I rebooted, the malware found a way to come back and reinfect itself on my machine.

I'd recommend saving your data, and wiping your whole machine, reinstalling the operating system, and running a good anti-malware application like Kaspersky.

When I connect my laptop to a desktop monitor's hdmi port, why does the desktop's keyboard and mouse stop working ? On switching back to desktop mode, they start working. Please suggest urgently.

A monitor can only show one screen at a time. If you connect your laptop to your monitor, it will only show your laptop, not your desktop. That is why your desktop mouse and keyboard don't seem to respond. You won't see them on your monitor if you have the laptop plugged into it.

What is fix me stick used for

Bootable, USB-based antivirus uses scanning engines from Sophos, Kaspersky, and GFI/VIPRE. Extremely easy to use. Full undo in case of problems (means you can "undo" whatever it's done if you find a problem with its action"). Remote-control tech support available if needed (you will pay for this support, so be careful).

  • Cons Can't disinfect virus-infected files, can only quarantine them. Quarantine of system files rendered two test systems unbootable, requiring full undo. Can't handle malware traces in Registry. Alleged removal failed to prevent several detected rootkits from running (when you use multiple services to try to completely disinfect a computer, removal of viruses is NOT an option - only quarantine - which means the infected file is still on your computer).
  • Bottom Line

When a nasty malware infestation leaves Windows non-bootable or prevents antivirus installation, the USB-based bootable FixMeStick offers an easy-to-use solution. In testing it didn't clean up everything, but then, it's not intended as a standalone solution. This product's aim is to get your PC into a state where your desktop antivirus can finish the cleanup.

  • I pasted the above from a Google search, and will add to it here: If you want to really clean up your computer, and cannot install a good program to do the job, this stick may help you get back into your system and get things under control. However, several things are important from here on. 1 - always do a back up of all critical file, and consider using cloud back up (such as drop box). 2 - use real QUALITY Anti-Virus software. I helped test the top 100 about 6 years ago, and Vipre Internet Security was #1 in every category - anti-virus - anti-malware - and limited use of system resources (about 11% - compared to 34% for Norton or McAfee). The best security on any computer is the person at the keyboard. NEVER open unknown emails, never visit questionable site and such. Manually scan your computer at least once a month (or more) to keep it clean, keep the Recycle Bin empty, and use Ccleaner to keep the registry minimal. Good luck and God bless...

One card interfering with other connections

Have you checked to make sure the laptop wireless NIC isn't acting as an AP by mistake? That could explain both desktop and laptop connectivity issues. Just a thought.
