Changing the boot type will have no effect on whether or not you can still enter the bios.
The easiest way I find is to remove the hdd and RAM. Start up the laptop and it will do odd things. Power it off, replace the RAM with no hdd and go to the bios settings. Once there, reinstall the hdd and go to bios settings, reset back to legacy. Some systems will not support UEFI but if they do, a hdd without a system on a separate partition, will no longer work.

Can legacy bios ever boot gpt efi, say with a linux efi emulation.

Ok so when it's trying to boot in legacy mode it will see the hard disk as unformatted. Therefore it won't boot Windows 8 or 10. You need to get the bios back into booting uefi.
Resetting the bios should do that anyway, but there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get into the bios to make that change. Try doing this with the hard disk unplugged so you don't risk trashing it.

Samsung 350v5c blue screen, no signal & won't boot

I would recommend resetting your BIOS back to the defaults.

  1. Turn your computer on and use F2 to access the BIOS.
  2. Using the arrow keys, navigate to the Exit menu.
  3. Look for the option (or similar) Load Defaults and press Enter.
  4. Press F10 to save and exit the BIOS.
  5. Your laptop should revert to the default BIOS and boot order settings.

How do I install windows 7 after a fatal crash?

Hi Charles,

You will need to access your systems bios. But in order to do so you will first need to disconnect the drive.

Then when you restart, you should see an option to enter the bios (usually F2 for ACERs)

Within the settings, you will be looking for storage configuration or perhaps boot device options. When you find "UEFI" option, change it to "legacy". Then, while you're there, be sure to change your first boot device to CD/DVD ROM. (Assuming that is the install disc you are using). Save settings and reboot.

Should be good to go with a typical Win7 install upon boot but drop a note if not.

please check bios boot type I sujspect it may be booting for UEFI rather than for legacy boot. Windows 8 will boot on UEFI boot type but windows 7 will need legacy bios type of boot up settings in bios

Check the boot sequence. For a normal boot, it should be set to hard disk as first item, not the network.

Tecra A11 can't see all of 3TB drive

Support for Disk Drives Beyond 2.2 TeraBytes (TB) and 4K Advanced Format Sectors

Most legacy systems built before 2011 have a traditional PC BIOS. This type of BIOS uses a Master Boot Record (MBR). The MBR Partitions can define a disk drive capacity up to 2.2TB. Windows operating systems that boot from an MBR are therefore limited to 2.2TB per MBR. A 3TB disk drive in a legacy BIOS and Window system will need a DiscWizard device driver to access the full capacity of a 3TB disk drive. Two partitions will be necessary because of the MBR limitation. The device driver mounts the capacity above 2.2TB with another MBR which looks to the system as a second virtual "physical" device.
GUID Partition Tables (GPT) can define drives larger than 2.2TB. You can use GPT today on any Windows 10/ 8.1/8/7 and Vista system as a non-booting data drive. Windows can only boot a GPT partition on a new type of BIOS called UEFI.
UEFI BIOS desktop systems are new since 2011. Windows 10/8/8.1/7 64-bit and Vista 64-bit operating systems support booting from UEFI and GPT without the need of a non-Microsoft device driver. This is the Windows native solution for booting a 3TB drive to a single partition.
Quick facts about Windows and 3TB drives:

  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista support GPT 3TB single partitions
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can only boot GPT on systems with UEFI BIOS
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can mount a GPT non-booting data drive
  • Intel RST device drivers before v10.1 do not support 3TB disk drives
  • Windows systems with Legacy BIOS and MBR boot drives are limited to 2.2TB partitions
  • Windows XP does not support GPT
  • Windows XP sees a 3TB drive as 800GB on boot or data drives
  • DiscWizard software can install a device driver which opens the full capacity of a 3TB. You can use it to create a second partition for the capacity above 2.2TB
