LG Refrigerator--Melted Light Fixture

I like many of you experienced the smell of burning plastic in my 13 month old refrigerator (model LFX25960SW) yesterday. I am just shocked that this could actually happen AND that this many people have been dealing with this. I have contacted LG CS and a service tech will be here tomorrow morning and SUPPOSEDLY repair under warranty. My big question is: Will this happen again and is this truly a fire hazard? What if this happens during the night? Is my family in danger? If somebody has concrete evidence that it is not a hazard I would like to know so I can sleep at night. We've liked the unit up until now, and hate to just through away a $2,000 fridge!!

Be aware that LG will not pay for any other device person to repair your refrigerator. If you were unlucky like I was to not have discovered the settlement against LG until after I had an independent service person out, they refuse to let him fix it even though he correctly diagnosed it and had ordered the parts. Also they refuse to acknowledge anything on their website about the light problem. You have to go the settlement administrator to learn about it. LG had my refrigerator warranty registered and identified me from my phone number but they could not take the time or trouble to write and advise about the potential problem. We had to learn about this through the burning plastic and our ruined food. Now I will be out some money for the repair guy who they will not accept. No more LG products for me.

I too have had this happen, I was going to replace the door switch but found out that the light is controlled by the main board. If I removed the light bulbs for a couple of days, then replaced them the lights would work properly for a while but then the light would stay on again. Anyway I replaced the two 40W light bulbs with 3W LED light bulbs and the control board can handle the 3Ws without a problem. Also if the lights should stay on, the LEDs are a cold light and will not melt the plastic or your food.

I just had the same thing happen yesterday. The Sears repairman has been and gone, and he has advised me that LG has issued a Service Alert for the problem. They have created a new panel for the fridges with a thermostat that measures the temperature of the lights and shuts them off if they get too hot. In addition, he is going to replace the motherboard of the computer in the fridge. I feel that LG should send notifications to retailers that sell this product and that every purchaser of these fridges made in 2006 should be alerted to this potential problem.

I had the same thing happen to my LG LFX25950SB French door style. It is out of warranty but when I called 1-800-243-0000 LG customer service, they were vary helpfull. The CSR instructed me to take the lightbulbs out and he scheduled a service tech out within 5 days. No charge for parts or labor. I must admit I am impressed.

LG Knows about this design flaw. That is why all of their refers built after 2006 have LED lighting. I have had mine melt two times already. The first time they said my warranty had expired and I would have to pay for it. I got a manager on the phone and complained of a safety hazard. They sent someone out and fixed it at no cost to me. It just melted again! now I have to go through the whole mess again!

This is not a trivial problem of someone leaving the door open and having a plastic part come in contact with the bulb. Read here:
http://wizbandit.wordpress.com/2008/08/01/lg-fridge-turns-into-easy-bake-oven-family-escapes-fire/

I have had 3 service calls on this issue and the problem still exists. There is simply a design flaw that they either can't or is unwilling to fix that causes the light to stay on even when the door is closed. Anyone who owns one of these units should *immediately* replace the bulbs with CFL or LED bulbs to make sure there is no fire danger. Also, don't trust them when they say it's fixed. That's what they told me after each service call. I've got LED bulbs in there now so if it stays on, it won't melt, burn, or spoil food.

Good luck.

Hi,
when he comes tomorrow watch what he does so you know what he did and why its doing that. maybe ask him to just cut the part off thats close to the bulb, I dont know if its the interior bulb, if it is then the bulb is on only when you open the door and its minor and cosmetic, if its the interior bulb just have them leave the bulb cover off untill LG comes up with a fix for you. If its something else you may have to get ahold of the company and see about this design flaw..
good luck

Relays are located on the left side of the compressor. How long ago did you smell the burning smell? Are you 100% sure the compressor is running? If it is, nothing is wrong with the relays. Although sometimes it is hard to tell if the compressor is running. By morning temps will be higher than tonight if compressor isnt running. If it isnt running, relays must be changed. I will post shortly on how to change the relays.

Karri,

I experienced the same problem with my LG refrigerator (model LFC25760ST). Came home from a weekend trip only to find that the light bulb assembly had melted and dropped onto the top shelf. The interior of the refirgerator compartment was very warm (est. 70 to 80 degrees) and everything in it had spoiled. Fortunately, nothing worse had happened. (According to consumer information on the Internet this LG refrigerator is suspected - but not proven - to have been the cause of a couple of house fires.)

There was no recall, however, because the reports to the Consumer Products Safety Commission were for less than 5% of this model sold in the U.S. But if you contact LG customer service (1-800-243-0000) whether your unit is still under warranty or not they should send someone out to replace the lamp assembly at no charge to you - this one with a heat sensor that serves as a backup to turning the lights off once the doors are closed.

Newer LG refrigerators have LED lights instead of incandescent light bulbs so they don't produce enough heat to warm the interior of the fridge or melt the light housing.

To learn more about other folk's similar experiences with these LG refrigerators just do an Internet search using "LG and "LCF25760" and "melted plastic." (Note: Leave the other letters after the five numbers in the model number off - they only refer to the exterior finish [i.e., "ST" = stainless steel] and unnecessarily narrow the search so as to miss some links.

Good luck with LG customer service.

That should be a covered repair. There was a safety bulletin on that. Call Sears and complain. Tech should have known that.

Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan Plastic Burning Smell

I think you have already figured out what the problem most likely is; 60 watt bulbs. Down-size the wattage or install 'energy saver' bulbs if they will fit the application. Instead of counting on these units for extra lighting, perhaps think about Track lighting to fill in those ares that need more but subtle light.
Good luck. :)
