Reset sql sa password directly and efficiently

A few days ago, I had a painful experience that I lost SA password on my MS SQL Server database, and I almost took the whole weekend to look for an efficient way to reset SA password. I asked friends, searched on Internet and even bought some book.... Fortunately, I finally got a SQL server password recovery software and it instantly reset SA password without data loss. And I also got a couple of good solutions for sql sa password reset to save your weekend in case you have lost or forgot MS SQL Server passwords (SA password!).

Option 1 : Use MS SQL Server Password Unlocker to Recover/Reset SA Password

The most direct, efficient way to reset SA password is to take use of the third part utility - SQL server password recovery software. Just two steps:

Step 1: Access to master.mdf file, which is default at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\master.mdf

Step 2: Select SA password and reset SA password
So, Reset SA password successfully!

Option 2 : Recover or Reset SA Password with Other SQL Server Login
If there is any other SQL Server Login that is a member of sysadmin role, you can log in using that account and reset SA password of SQL Server. Reset sql sa password as described here :

SQL SERVER - Reset Password of SA Login Using Management Studio.

Login into SQL Server using Windows Authentication.

In Object Explorer, open Security folder, open Logins folder. Right Click on
SA account and go to Properties.

Reset SA password, and confirm it. Click OK.

Make sure to restart the SQL Server and all its services and test new password by log into system using SA login and new password.

Option 3 : Recover or Reset SA Password with Windows Login that is a member of Windows Admin Group

If there is any other Windows Login that is a member of Windows Admin Group, log in using that account. Start SQL Server in Single User Mode as described followings :

SQL SERVER - Start SQL Server Instance in Single User Mode.

There are certain situation when user wants to start SQL Server Engine in "single user" mode from the start up.

To start SQL Server in single user mode is very simple procedure as displayed below.

Go to SQL Server Configuration Manager and click on SQL Server 2005 Services. Click on desired SQL Server instance and right click go to properties. On the Advance table enter param '-m;' before existing params in Startup Parameters box.

Make sure that you entered semi-comma after -m. Once that is completed, restart SQL Server services to take this in effect. Once this is done, now you will be only able to connect SQL Server using sqlcmd.

When was the last time the SQL Server sa password changed?

With the rights that the sa login has by default in SQL Server, it is imperative to change this password on a regular basis whether it is monthly, quarterly or semi-annually. In addition, as DBAs move on to other opportunities, it is wise to change the sa password as well. Changing sa password should be a relatively easy process requiring little to no impact on the organization. Unfortunately, changing the sa password on a regular basis is not a common practice at most organizations, because the impacts of changing the password are unknown.
The first step in the process is to find out when the sa password was last changed. If this timeframe is unacceptable to your organization, then steps need to be taken to understand where the sa login is used and how the application can be modified to use another login.
SQL Server 2000 - sa password changes
In SQL Server 2000 a documented process does not exist to determine when the sa password was changed. The best means to determine if the sa password has changed is based on the value from the updatedate column in the master.dbo.syslogins table. This value seems to be the only possible column to determine if any property (default database, default language, etc.) for the sa login has changed. Since the sa properties do not change frequently, the value for this column should be a reasonable, but not an absolute indicator of when the sa password was last changed. Reference the code below to determine the value for the sa login's updatedate column.
USE Master
SELECT sid, [name], createdate, updatedate
FROM master.dbo.syslogins
WHERE [name] = 'sa'
GOSQL Server 2005 - sa password changes
Unfortunately, SQL Server 2005 suffers from the same self documenting issue as SQL Server 2000 as it pertains to the last time the sa password has changed. The modify_date of the sys.sql_logins catalog view can be used as an indicator of when the last property (default database, default language, etc.) for the login has changed. Just as is the case with SQL Server 2000, this value does not guarantee the date ime stamp of the password change, but rather any property change. Since the properties do not change frequently under normal circumstances this value can serve as a reasonable, but not an absolute indicator of when the sa password was last changed. If other properties have changed, the modify_date is not a true indicator and other research/documentation is needed to determine the last sa password change date.
USE Master
SELECT [name], sid, create_date, modify_date
FROM sys.sql_logins
WHERE [name] = 'sa'

The easiest way to reset sql sa password.

无标题文档 The easiest way to reset sql sa password. One of my friends complained that: I am not a sql db manager by any means but I've been asked to reset sa password for a sql 2005 server. My concern is ...will changing this password have any effect on applications that use sql 2005. They use Micro CRM 3.0, and I don't want to disrupt their service. The reason they want to reset the password is because they recently bought a new accounting package that will tie into CRM, and the technicians are requesting the password to complete the install.
In fact, MS SQL Server Password Unlocker can reset sql password in no snap! Just install the sa password recovery program on the computer where the sql master.mdf is saved. MS SQL Server Password Unlocker accesses to the master.mdf file directly and lists all the users to the database. For accessing the master.mdf smoothly, the password recovery program detects and stops the running SQL Services automatically
