I'm gonna catch it for this but this is how I did it. Corroded batteries in the cylinder will eat and seize the aluminum threads on the end cap and it's pretty much toast after that.

What I did was drill, yes drill a 0.125" (1/8") hole exactly .25" (1/4") above the seam between the end cap and the tube .0125" (1/8") into the tube. No more than that or you will jeopardize the integrity of the waterproof factor.

Drop one drop of a quality penetrating oil, or even diesel fuel, into the hole every hour while randomly tapping the tube with a metal object to create a vibration to help the penetrating oil travel throughout the threads and dislodge the corrosive hold on your end cap.

It might take a couple of days to loosen it up and try it with your channel-locks and a lined vice or strong wife. Just plan on gaining 1/32" movement and go back and forth until it gives up the grip. That process might take another day too. Keep adding the drop of penetrating oil along with the tapping religiously.

It WILL work provided your patience holds out. Don't force it... well, not too much anyway. You can actually save it this way.

How do you replace the batteries

If yours is like all the ones I have had over many years the base cap unscrews by turning counter clockwise. They have a o-ring seal on the cap and some times they can be very tight. The housing is made out of aircraft grade aluminum and I have had one that was cross threaded at the factory and had to use pliers to get the cap off. Thank you.

I could not unscrew the bottom part to change the battery. Should I use unscrew it by anti clockwise or clockwise only. I even spray WD40 beforehand.

Counter clockwise to get bottom cap off. They're usually pretty tight because cap is steel and tube is aluminum. Grab tube with pliers and try turning cap

Can't open the flash light to change the batteries? Does the bottom open up? Do the batteries get replaced from the top by removing the bulb first?

The back, tail cap, should be unscrewed from the maglite to replace the batteries. It can be pretty hard to open as they are generally not opened very often and there's a rubber seal to keep it water-proof. You could try using a pliers or vice but be careful not to squeeze it out of shape.

There's also a possibility that if the batteries are in it a long time that they have leaked and the leaked chemicals have sealed it. If this is the case you may be able to get the maglite replaced depending on what brand of batteries were in it. Maglite have an agreement with the makers of Duracell, Ever-Ready and Ray-O-Vac to replace the Maglite if one of their batteries leak in it.

Details are on the bottom of page at

Battery case does not open

make sures its being turned to the left, and if it will not come off, wrap duct tape around it to protect it and use large vice grips or pliers to get it off. Vice grips would be better as the lock but dont' lock them down too tight as you can dent the cap.

Mini Maglite _ Can't open battery housing to change batteries

If there's a lanyard hole in the cap find something that will fit in that hole for leverage. If not you might have to use some vice grip pliers or two of them. There is a possibility that the batteries have leaked inside the light and has corroded the threads.

Frozen tail cap

Sprayed penetrating oil all the way around the end cap at seal area. Layed flashlight on it's side on a plastic block & tapped on housing just below the end cap with composite mallet while rotating. Then used aluminum jaws in a vise to hold housing while turning end cap with large pliers.
Once cap is off, clean corrosion with automotive battery cleaner & soak inside with more penetrating oil to remove batteries.
