HOW LONG DO YOU COOK A TURKEY

Hi Kathy.

Happy Holidays. The answer to your question is 'it depends'. On size of turkey, how you cook it (deep frying is faster than roasting, for instance, while smoking is really slow), and how you're judging it to be done. The most effective, and safest way to assist the cooking is to have a meat thermometer that can be inserted into the deep part of the ,er, white meat (the word police tagged me here) to monitor when it gets to a target temperature, usually in the 160-170F range. If possible, it's a very worthwhile investment to get a remote probe thermometer, with a cable that snakes out around the oven door and displays the meat temperature. Opening the door all the time to check temperature lets the heat out and runs the cooking all day.

I'm a big fan of the Alton Brown/Good Eats recipe
Good Eats Roast Turkey Alton Brown Food Network if you have the time ahead, the brining really makes for a moist tasty bird, and the actual cook time is usually between 2 and 3 hours, depending on the bird size. The initial high heat sear makes for great browning and crisp skin.

As a general rule, allow 20-30 minutes after baking for the turkey to rest before carving (cover in foil during this time). It'll cook a bit so as not to burn you while carving, and the juices re-absorb into the meat. (carve right away and a lot of the juice will run down onto the carving surface.

Bon Apetit!

I need to know the cooking times for my chicken

Use a thermometer and measure the chicken, keep track of how long it takes then you have the time it takes to cook that piece. It is always best to use a thermometer when cooking meat.

Generally I bake chicken at 350 degrees F. for 30 to 40 minutes. To be sure that the chicken bre asts are cooked thoroughly, use a instant digital Cooking or Meat Thermometer for the proper temperature of 165 degrees F.

These links will help.

Is there a place where I can find the cooking times for meats? Our old grill had a wonderful booklet which listed the cooking times for a one inch steak, chicken breast, ribs, etc. Thanks!

Since all grills heat and cook differently, time is not always the best judge for cooking meats. Use what I and many other professional griller's use, an instant read insertable Meat Thermometer. They are not expensive and can found in the kitchen accessories dept of any big box store. I'm not talking about some electronic gadget. I'm talking about the same thing professional chefs use. It's small, fits in your pocket and has the cooking temperatures for beef, pork, fowl, fish, etc written on the side of it's holder. Whether you like it rare to well done, the temperature range is indicated on the side of the holder.

Keep in mind, the thermometer on a grill is reading the air temperature when the hood is closed. Not the temperature at the cooking grates. Which can be 50 to 100 degrees F, hotter.

If this doesn't sound like want you want to try. Go to www.foodnetwork.com and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. Plus, some GREAT grilling recipes.

Hope this helped you and Happy Grilling!!

The best method would be to use a food thermometer to measure the temperature of the food, and change the cooking time to get to the correct temperature.

The oven does not cook the food, it only warms the food.

Two possible problems. If the oven has two or more elements for normal operation then one of these elements may be faulty. The thermostat may also be faulty and only heating to a far lesser temperature than required. The way to tell is turn the oven to a normal cooking temperature.
If the oven indicator light stays on all the time and doesn't cycle off then it may be an element problem, meaning that the oven can't reach the temperature setting desired.
If the oven indicator light goes off after a while and then cycles on and off then the thermostat is working correctly but the temperature may not be hot enough. You may have to purchase a small oven thermometer and check the oven temperature against the thermometer to get a better idea of what the problem is.

Have a Proctor Silex small crock pot, no manual. Setting are Off, 1, 2 and "AutoShift". There is no timer. How can it be set to (1) be sure to cook the food long enough and (2) stay on / keep...

You can find a Use and Care Guide for your product at the following website. You will need to locate the model number of your crock point. Select Slow_Cookers in the product field; Select your model number and click on Submit.

A pdf file of your Use and care Guide will be provided; note they are scanned files and some are of poor quality.

Model 36400 has a similar control to your model. The Guide provides a table of the time to cook at settings 1 (low), 2 (high) and Auto Shift. Auto Shift starts at the high setting and then decreases to the low setting. The time to cook at Auto shift is in between the time taken at the low and high settings. The low and Auto Shift settings are designed for long cook times at a simmer. On the high setting some foods like soups will come to a boil and may need stirring during cooking.

The crock point has no auto turn off and will keep foods at a simmer when on the low or Auto Shift settings. With some practice you will learn how much time this will take for various foods.

The sure way is to use a tip sensitive digital instant-read thermometer to check the final temperature of the food. Check according the guidance provided by the Partnerships Food Safety Education:
