Will need to check and test thermocouple --valve unit --and that your hooked up correctly propane [lp] to a propane unit or natural gas to a natural gas valve unit --also check flame is contacting the thermocouple

Sounds like the thermocouple is bad. Pushing the knob bypasses the thermocouple and permits ignition once you let go after thirty seconds it is supposed to stay lit. This is common with heaters.
