The Latitude D series laptops have a CMOS which does not rely on a battery to retain the data contained therein. Normal resetting tricks don't work with these, which is one of the given strengths of a business laptop. If the password is in the BIOS, the only thing that can be done is replacement of this chip (8-pin DIP package), which are available in bulk at around US$0.90 each; most companies that provide this service charge around US$100 just for the chip!
If the password is on the OS, there is software out there that can remove the password.

You can reset your password by using a CD with a utility to start up the computer from and then reset your password.
Look here for what to do:
And here for instructions and download at the end of page:

Beware that if you have EFS encrypted files you will need to remember your old password. But not many people do.
Good luck.

On laptop systems you would not use the jumper to reset a bios password. To reset the bios password you will need to contact Dell Support. They will verify ownership of the system and then provide you with information on resetting the bios password.

I cant log in as i usually would the system request fo password

You can try the following steps

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the machine first starts you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a menu (Advance boot option).
    3. When you have the menu on the screen. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
    5. Log in as an Administrator
    6. Then go to Control Panel
    7. Select User Account
    8. Select the User for which you are being prompted to Enter password
    9. Then click on Remove password
    10. Restart the computer in Normal mode (without pressing F8 key)
    Hope this resolves your issue

There is no room to enter a domain.

I'm assuming that the operating system is XP.

Log in to your account as you usually would. Right click on My Computer and select Properties from the list. Click on the Computer Name tab. Where it says "To rename this computer or join a domain" click on change. A new window will pop up so click on Workgroup. In the typing plane if it say's MSHOME, delete that and type WORKGROUP make sure you type it in uppercase (capital letters).
When you've done that click OK.
The computer will tell you that you have to restart the computer for the changes to take effect so please restart the computer.

Once the computer has restarted you can check if the domain has changed to WORKGROUP.

Please post back if you need anymore help.

How do i change the configuration from domain to work group

even if you mistakenly joined a domain you can still log in through your existing id and password.
Once your press CTRL+ALT+DEL, you will see a login window with three fields namely: user id, password and Domain.
In the log in screen use the drop-down menu in front of Domain (which shows your new domain- most likey MSHome) and choose 'this computer'. After this, enter your old/existing user id and password and hit enter.
Please proceed to your system settings and change your domain back to Workgroup. Restart PC.

Switched to workgroup for my lenovo laptop - now can log in

are you loging in onto the network? if so you'll need the network user account name and logon

if you know the logon name and password make sure your logging in to the computer user profile not the networked one.

typically the user name is Administrator. 2 accounts are created admin and guest, though most the time Guest is not activated.

if your really outa luck Try a program called Ophcrack :]
either use it as a bootup disk or run it google it sourceforge!

Dell latitude d820 can't get intothe bios set up screen

The BIOS password is stored in CMOS memory which is attached to the motherboard. If you remove this battery, all CMOS information (including the BIOS password) will be lost. You will need to re-enter the correct CMOS setup information to use the machine.

Hope you find this information usefull.
your feedback is appreciated.
