Look for fn key near control, then there is a lcd key on one of the f buttons
hold down together,
if nothing try to plug a desktop monitor in the back of laptop,if you see all is good on monitor

Hi!!!!
As i understand the issue you can see the lights on but no monitor screen and no sound....Well in this case there are a few troubleshooting steps...

1st Solution

Perform a Hard Reset...Hard Reset is to remove the excess Flea Power from the system....To do this we need to unplug the charger pin from the notebook and then turn the notebook upside down remove the battery and then press the power on button for 30 seconds without the battery and without the charger pin connected to the system....Then we should connect the battery and then plug in the A/C Adapter Pin to the notebook....Restart the notebook...This should work....Once it works we need to go ahead and reset the Bios by shutting down the system and as soon as you restart the system you can press the F10 Key....After that we need to go ahead and press the F9 Key (Load Setup Defaults)....Press the F10 Key to Save and Exit....Then go online and download the BIOS Driver for your computer by going to www.hp.com/support if you are from USA or www.hp.ca/support Canada...After you Flash the BIOS...Still nothing happens please do let me know or contact HP on 1-800-474-6836....or contact the online chat support....

I have a dell m1730 laptop. I turned it off last night before bed, when i got home from doing my running around this afternoon i went to turn on the laptop. The computer turned on, the keyboard lit up,...

Have you tried going to the BIOS? If you can see the BIOS screen there's video and the hard drive could be the issue. If you can't see anything but black screen you probably need to replace screen and or video invertor board.

Computer monitor don't work at all.

So basically your monitor's power supply system died.
Nothing much a non-technician could do about it.
Get it repaired, if under warranty, get a replacement before the coverage duration expires.

Touch pad always lit up...

Yes, if the leds are all lit and no respnse, then your board in the top counsel is faulty. Have you haad any power surges recenlty.? Power surges sometimes mess up computer boards. But yeah, it sounds like its bad tho. There should be led light on unless you start pushing buttons. Have you hit the "off" selection. If nothing turns off the led lighting, it sounds like the board might be bad...hopefully this helps

When I switch on the computer there is nothing on the screen

Do you hear anything during startup, beeps, fans or drives spinning, lights on the front or back of computer flashing or lit up? Do you hear the Windows starting sound?
Let us know more then we can troubleshoot better. It is starting to sound like 1 of 3 things, Power supply, Video card or motherboard.
Situation #1: If you get a blank screen and no sounds or movement it either indicates that the power supply unit (PSU) has failed or something on the motherboard has failed, preventing normal startup.
Situation #2: If you get sounds and lights but nothing on the screen then it indicates a failed or loose video card.
Always try a different power outlet that you know is working. (Eliminate the easy stuff first!)
If it is out of warranty, Try opening up the case, with the power off, of course. If you have Sit #2 and have a video card that you can reseat try that.
Also take the time to inspect the capacitors on the motherboard (they look like tiny soda cans) and check for tops that are bulging, swelling or leaking anything. Capacitors should be perfectly flat on top. If you find these then your motherboard is bad (well technically the capacitors on your motherboard are bad). The caps will need replacing to fix (not a job for an amatuer). If it passes the visual inspection then it may just be your power supply is bad. Notice that a bad PSU does not mean you are getting no power, just not enough to start and run the computer.

Monitor is blank when we turn the computer on.

Maybe not. Find the FN key. It is usually BLUE in color
Then look on TOP row of Computer keyb (or all over) and find CRT/LCD.
Press the FN and that key and your screen should come back. You accidentally sw. it to CRT (outside, external monitor)

Powers up but black screen shows

1st - Try pressing <Fn> + <BrithnessUP> keys a few times, (on HP <Fn> key is between <Ctrl> key and <Windows> key, <BrightnessUP> key is <F8> key and <BrightnessDown> key is <F7> key. If nothing happens try the 2nd one.
2nd - Plugin external monitor, (type and size doesn't matter). Turn on your laptop. If you can see desktop on the external monitor, your drivers are o.k., The problem is your laptop display, NOT the graphic chip.
