I have my wifi thermostat set for heating at 68 degrees. Are they supposed to come on even if the temperature has not changed? It is a heat pump setup, It seems to be on more than off. Temp outside 50

ok...where to start.lol ....the thermostat is just a switch.It will tell the unit to run or not run.if you measure the temp with the heatpump running,the air is warmer than 68 but it feels cool to you because your body is 98.6.The unit will run more often and for longer periods when the temperature drops outside for a few reasons.First,your house has more of a load to heat,meaning you have more heat loss because of the difference in temperatures outside and inside.Second,your heat pump pulls heat from the outside air.The colder the air outside,the less btu's for it to pull.If you have anymore questions hillbuck29@aol.com Hope this helps,Dave

I would insist that Sears either have a Senior tech come out and fix it or return it to the state it was prior to them touching. Then call some one else. Have them involve the Goodman rep in your area.

Is this an electric or gass furnace - Eather of these can can have this problem its most recomendable that you call a seviceman .
in the case of electric furnace you may requier a new heat sequencer. And in the case of gass you may requier a new relay.

SOURCE: Heat pump fan does not run when house heat is on

The outside fan should be running except when the Heatpump goes in to defrost mode. Then the fan stops with the compressor running and it switches the reversing valve to heat up the outdoor coil. That should last about 5 min and you may see steam come off of the outdoor coil. That's normal.
Is the compressor running? It's possible that it's stuck in defrost or the fan simply died. I hope this helps.

My thermostat is set on 68 degrees and it shows room temperature is 68, but the furnace still kickson, Honeywell said it has a 1 degree difference. so what's the problem then?


Yes there is a one degree tolerance, in fact my heater just kicked on and it is set to 67 and the inside temperature reads 67. It is also a Honeywell.

What does it mean when the aux is flashing on my thermostat?


I assume that you have a heat pump system. If this is the case, the outside temperature is probably lower than the heat pump is sized for and it is using the auxiliary heating system to keep up. The auxiliary heating system usually is an electric coil in the heat pump unit which supplements the heat being produced by the heat pump. This is normal operations and does not indicate a problem with the heat pump, it is just really cold outside. If it is not colder than usual outside, there may be a problem with the heat pump and you should call a heating contractor to check it out.

If you are talking about the difference between heating mode and cooling mode and the room setpoint, you can not change it. It comes from the factory with a 3 degree difference. In other words if you raise the heat setpoint until it is within 3 degrees of the cooling setpoint, for every degree you raise the heat setpoint the cooling will raise a degree.
About all you can do is increase the distance between the heat and cooling setpoint. To do this either lower the cooling setpoint to 3 degrees higher than the heat setpoint you want and then increase the cooling setpoint the desired setting. For example heat and cool setpoints are 67 and 70 respectively, and you want 65 and 73. Lower the cooling setpoint to 68 and then raise the cooling setpoint to 73. Now your heating will come on 3 degress lower than 68, the 65 you wanted and cooling will come on at 73. Remember, the thermostat new setpoints will turn on the cooling at 75 and turn back off at 73 and heat will turn on at 63 and turn off at 65.
You can perform the same using the heating setpoint, just have to look at it backwards. If you need to lower the difference I recommend a 8000 series thermostat. They are the most functional thermostat that Honeywell makes, be in mind they are about 3 times more expensive and many of the setting require a well trained tech to interpret and set properly.

If your thermostat has an emergency heat setting this means you have a heat pump system.
Yes you need to set the thermostat to heat for heating the house.
The emergency heat setting should never be used unless your outside unit is not functioning.
The emergency heat setting overides the heat pump (the outside unit will not be energized).
The emergency heat setting will run the auxillary heat (heat strips) only.
When the thermostat is set in the heat position the heat pump will run to heat your house.
If the heat pump can't keep up (extreme cold) then then the auxillary heat will kick in to augment the heat pump until it satisfies the thermostat settings. If your room temperature gets 2 degrees below your thermostat setpoint, your auxillary heat will kick on. Example, say you are going to be gone a couple of days and you turn your heat down to 60 degrees. When you return and it is 60 degrees in your house, you turn the thermostat up to 70 degrees. Since you are turning the temperature up 2 degrees or more (10 degrees in this case) from the 60 degree room temperature then the heat pump will come on and the auxillary heat strips. The unit will continue heating like this until the temperature in the house gets to 69 degrees and the heat strips will turn off and the heat pump will continue to run until the 70 degree setpoint is reached.

You didn't include a model number, so it's hard to know for sure - but I'll take a stab at this one. Many of these t-stats have a programmable offset to reduce "hunting". This can be as little as 1 degree or more than 2 degrees.

This means if you set the offset to 1 degree and the room temperature to about 65 degrees, the furnace will heat the room until the t-stat registers a rising temperature of 66 degrees. The furnace shuts off and will not turn on again until the t-stat registers a falling temperature of 64 degrees. The average is 65 degrees, and prevents the furnace from starting and stopping numerous times instead of just once with the 1 degree offset.

You can further reduce the number of furnace start and stops by increasing the offset to 2 degrees. This would work like this when the t-stat is set to 65 degrees and the room is cool:

Room Temp Furnace
63 On
64 On
65 On
66 On
67 On
68 Off

The room is now warm and heat or furnace is off. The room begins to cool like below:

67 Off
66 Off
65 Off
64 Off
63 Off
62 On

With a 1 degree offset, the room temperature varies +/-1 degree (about 2 degrees total). With a 2 degree offset, the temperature about varies +/ -2 degrees (about 4 degrees total).

Also, when the thermostat shut the heat off, the heat that was made is delivered to the space instead of wasted by sending outdoors - so the room will get a little warmer even though no fuel is being burned. The same holds true at the other end. When the t-stat turn heat on, fuel is burned, but there's little heat until the source has reached the optimum temperature and then the heat is delivered to the space.

Your thermostat is reading the temperature where it is located.
If it is located next to a heat source maybe it is picking up that added heat .
Try relocated your thermostat

Temp set at 68 degrees but goes to 66 and the heat pump never shuts down has an electric aux


Depending on the outside temp. your heat pump might not keep up with the demand. It is not economical to run your heat pump in temperatures at or below freezing. Doing so could cause compressor failure and these are not cheap to replace. I would be running the aux. electric in low temps.

You did not make it clear if the thermostat is a programmable unit or not. I am wondering if the thermostat is not set on the correct heat anticipation setting. A heat anticipater is a small heater that helps the thermostat turn off before it over shoots the desired temperature setting. If the thermostat is set for a 5 degree setting, it will turn off at 63 degrees if set at 68. If the anticipater was set at 1 or 2 degrees, it will shut off the heater at 66 or 67. Newer thermostats will only allow the thermostat to cycle 6 times per hour so if you never reach the desired temp, you have to wait 10 minutes before it will allow a call for heat. Check the installation instructions to see if there is a setting where you can get the anticipator temperature closer to your set temp. Good luck.
