Question about Toshiba Satellite 1905-S277 Notebook

2 Answers

I decided to upgrade the hard drive to a Western Digital 250 Gig from the original 30 Gig. I also added the RAM module-- making it 512 now. The problem is that after loading the original restore CD's that came with the computer-- when I click on "My computer"-- right click-- and check the properties of the C drive, it says there is only 127 Gig available. I've talked to a few people and they told me I had to update the BIOS. I did--- I downloaded to a floppy from the Toshiba website, version 1.4-- it still says 127... then I re-formatted-- again.... and it STILL says 127 Gig available.... I've been reading some chatter online, and some people are saying that messing with the BIOS has messed up the computer... so I am a little gun-shy to continue now-- because it is still working-- as far as I know.

Sorry to have to tell you but it’s not just the BIOS. The chipset controlling the hard drive will not recognize the newer hard drives because of the number of heads and cylinders. It is a physical limit and the older computers will not give you the full capacity. It should work fine as is but the rest of the space is wasted. I wish I could give a fix but I have never been aware of one. Good Luck

Is it formatted as NTFS FAT32 file system can only reconize 127 you must enable largr drive in the setup. but if you are using a image it wont give you that choice you will need to get a windows xp disk and use the driver / program disk to install you original software. you can also partition the drive into two particians to separate and it will then reconize the drives then you can mount the othe drive to a folder and then reclain all the drive space.

How can I upgrade/improve the capabilities of my Inspiron 1200

The best and quickest improvement is to add more RAM. Add another 512 Mb of RAM. If you already have a 512 Mb of RAM module then add another 512 Mb RAM module. If your laptop has 2X256 Mb RAM modules then you need to remove these and insert 2X512 Mb RAM modules.
The reason why you have 504 Mb RAM is that the video card has grabbed 8Mb of RAM off the main memory.

Change ram from 512 to 1 gig bios cannot read added ram

The original 2 sticks of 256 Mb of RAM gives you a total of 512
Mb of RAM. Two 512 Mb of RAM gives you a total of 1 Gb of RAM.
With two sticks of 512 Mb of RAM are you sure you got a total of 192 Mb of RAM, this is a lot less than the original RAM total of 512 Mb?
Should this be 1920 Mb of RAM?
If this 192 Mb is correct then the RAM modules are either not compatible with the laptop or if the RAM modules are not from the same manufacturer then they may not work together.

Most laptops have video cards that use part of the main RAM for video RAM, that is why the available RAM is less than the installed RAM modules. The amount of RAM the video card grabs depends upon the type of video card and in some cases the amount of video RAM can controlled in the BIOS setting.

Hi! It's correct that your Thinkpad will only accept up to 512 mb of memory, and only certain chips will work with your unit. Here is a link that shows the memory that will work.

If you start noticing problems with random shutdowns or anything like that I would suspect your power supply, the new parts might overload the power supply, but unless you're adding new parts that weren't there before in addition to the old parts you should be fine. Computers can last as long as you are willing to keep replacing parts.

Upgrading acer laptop RAM

Hi,
You Can Actually Upgrade This To 2 Gig Memory.
Each Slot Will Take 1 A Gig Strip.
I,d suggest Buying another 256 mb Strip, To Put Into Slot 2.
Or Buy a 512mb ( Half Gig ) Which Will Give you 750mb With your Existing Strip Already In There. ** Recommend 1 Gigabyte Max** 2 gig of Ram in This Baby Would Probably Start Glowing.
You Can Buy DDR/266/333 In 256/512/1 Gig Strips. These Are Commonly Known As SD-RAM-Modules.
