Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: USB hub

Do you have Windows XP and at least Service pack 2 installed.
Service Pack 2 comes bundled with the neccessary drivers for USB 2.0
In device manager under the USB heading you must have:
PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
In the list.

SOURCE: Installing USB Hub

finsphan72's response is correct but you could use information one step earlier.
USB 1.1 is the older version of USB.  USB 2.0 is newer and much faster.  Your computer has hardware in it to talk to USB.  Because it is an older computer, it has USB 1.1 hardware.
The USB hub is just a splitter.  It lets you plug in several USB devices while only using one USB port in your computer.  But it doesn't change the fundamental capabilities of your computer.
The only way to get a computer with USB 1.1 built-in to support USB 2.0 is to add a USB 2.0 card to the computer.  This is an open up the computer and install a piece of hardware operation.  It isn't very hard and it isn't very expensive, but it might not be something you are comfortable doing (and it is possible to mess things up - you probably wouldn't, but you could).  Maybe this is an "ask a high school age friend for a favor" sort of situation.

SOURCE: Power supply for Targus 4 hub usb 2

Most USB hubs do not need an external power supply, except when a connected USB device draws more power than the computer/laptop USB port can supply. In this case an external power supply will need to be connected to the USB hub.
Normally this would be a 5 volt power supply, but make sure the polarity on the connector matches the power connector on the hub, check the label on the hub, sometimes it states to power requirements of the hub as well as the polarity on the connector. Normally the pin on the hub's power connector is positive (ie. +5V)

SOURCE: my dynex usb hub is not working

You need to unplug the power adapter from the wall, and disconnect the usb cord from the PC/laptop for at least 30 seconds. Then plug everything back in. Apparently this model suffers from static electricity from time to time. I have this hub also and it works every time.

SOURCE: 4 port USB hub not working...

Try connecting the hub to another USB port. You may even connect this same device to another computer and check if that works. This will help isolate the issue better.

Perhaps the laptop port is designed for a usb 3.0 insert instead of a usb 2.0? Also try using compressed air to clean both connections. The hub male end and the laptop female end.

BAD News.
Usually the USB Port is a part of the Mother Board on a PC and the replacement of the Mother Board is the only solution.
You can find them on the internet at Ebay and other locations. BUT it is very involved to replace.

If you have one good USB Port, Get an adapter that will allow multiple inputs.

I have a model m01517 5 port usb hub. It has 2 usb cables to the computer, do I use the blue or black connector? I can only get one port to recognize a device plugged in the other four seem to be dead,...

Not sure I understand this hub either. Looks like only one port is a USB 2.0 port, but here is a snippet from the manual......

This iConcepts USB Hub provides the electronic interface between USB devices and the host, It allows up to five USB devices or Hubs to connect an upstream USB Hub or Host port.

Features
• One USB 2.0 port
• 4 Port USB 1.1 and support high speed (480 mbps) and 4 port full speed (12 mbps) operations.
• The USB 2.0 port can operate both USB 2.0 & 1.1 Devices
• USB 2.0 port supports self powered mode and bus - powered mode, indicated by a powered LED .
• Over current detection and protection

I installed a 4 port hub to speed up my file tranfer to a flash drive. The files transfer but not any faster then using the front usb ports. It is normal?

Yes. While the speed from the USB device to the USB hub may be faster (USB 2.0 protocol, rather than the slower USB 1.1 protocol), your hub is still connected to a USB 1.1 port on your computer.

"A HI SPEED USB device plugged into a non HI SPEED USB hub" error message, any idea? every time i plug a usb in to my computer it comes up that this device can perfom faster on a hi-speed usb port

This is not an error it just means that you are plugging in a usb 2.0 device into a usb 1.0 port. The devise will still function normally just not as fast. You could always add a usb 2.0 pci card to your computer.
