I have an old tetlow kiln that plugs into my power board 240 volt 20amp, have been offered a Duncan Energy saver kiln EA820. this is single phase 240 volt 24 amp. Is this ok with my power?

Yes 4 amps should not cause an issue.

as 240 volts is single phase , it will not be possible to reduce the power by cutting across a neutral wire ( 240 volt power out and 240 volt neutral return That is ac power ) to do what you want to do you will need a 3 phase generator so that you can jump across a phase to get lower power

I have 110 volts n each leg but not 220 across both why??


In a traditional North American residential electrical panel (120/240 volt, single phase), installing a single width or single pole circuit breaker, you would expect to read 120 volts from the breaker terminal screw to either ground or neutral. A double width or double pole breaker would provide 120 volts from either of the breaker terminal screws to ground or neutral AND it will provide 240 volts BETWEEN the TWO breaker terminals.

A single-width circuit breaker case that contains two handles is NOT a two pole circuit breaker (these are called "tandem" or "1/2 size" breakers). This is because a single width breaker engages only one "line" in the panel. A double width breaker will engage 2 "lines" as a triple width breaker would engage 3 "lines" of a 3 phase panel. A single wide breaker can not physically engage more than 1 "line" so it will never be able to pass 240 volts.

You must install a double width / double pole breaker to safely supply a 240 volt circuit / device.

My limited research indicates this heater is designed for USA electrical systems. That would mean single phase, 240/208 volts, 60 Hz. The drawings I reviewed shows a 2 pole, 240 volt breaker feeding each heating circuit. That means no "neutral wire" goes to the heater and therefore no 120 volts is needed. This is good. Kenya's system is single phase, 240 volts, 50 Hz. The heater should work reasonably well on the African system. Connect the power just like you would in the US.

Digital inverter generator has no 240 volt output


Most power inverters are strictly single-phase. Meaning true 120V or 240V, and no splitting or duplication. It sounds as if your inverter is a single phase 120V, and likely is not stackable on the AC side.

I recommend looking for a Low Frequency Split Phase power Inverter if you want both 240 and 110 volts.

there is no motor that is single phase with 415 volts only 240 volt or 120volt and you cannot use a 3 phase motor on single phase it will just fail to start buzz and burn it up .single phase motors have capacitors 3 phase motors do not

Here's what I think but you will have to check it out...
The fan motor in the 39 heater is a 120V fan there fore it cannot be hooked to the 240 which potentially could have the high (wild) leg as one of the fan legs...
The 240V 36 unit probably has a 240v fan motor....
Now if you were to make sure that the leg that fed the motor was a 120V to ground leg then you will be okay...
Hope you understand where I was going with this...

I want to connect a single phase 24 amp kiln under my waterproved pergola. What electrical work needs to be done and how much would it cost approxmatly?


That kiln requires a 30 amp circuit, minimum. 24 amps x 125%= 30 amps per National Electric Code (NEC).

Without more info, I'll need to make a few assumptions. For the sake of estimating the cost I'll present the following scenario:

1...The distance from your electric panel to the pergola is approximately 100 feet.

2...The circuit will be underground. I'll assume that you will be able to hire someone to dig an 18 inch deep trench from the electric panel to the pergoda for $10 hr. While this should only take 3 or 4 hrs, depending on soil conditions, it could take all day. So I'll assume $80 for this.

3...This will be a 240 volt, 30 amp circuit (see why below).

4...Since you posted under the Intermatic T171, and since that is a 120 volt timer, that the kiln is 120 volts.

5...Unless the pergoda is fully enclosed, NEC still requires a weatherproof installation.

For starters, I don't recommend a 120 volt kiln. Most people I've known who had a kiln always seemed to want a bigger one ;-) Again, I'll do the estimate for a 240 volt, 30 amp kiln, as the price difference compared to a 120 volt circuit is about the same.

Also, I strongly recommend using 3/4 inch PVC conduit as opposed to 1/2 inch PVC or UF (direct burial) cable. 3/4 inch conduit doesn't cost much more than 1/2 conduit and will allow you to install wire up to #6. UF cable, in my opinion, is out of the question because if you ever decide that you want a larger kiln the direct buried UF cable is _not_ easily replaceable. A conduit and wire installation is about the same price as UF anyway.

Here's the breakdown (US dollars):

$ 10 - 30 amp, 2-pole circuit breaker
120 - 300 feet of #10 THWN COPPER wire (40 cents a foot)
20 - 1 bundle (100 feet) 3/4 inch PVC conduit
10 - 3/4 inch PVC elbows, fittings, straps
20 - Weatherproof box and weatherproof cover
+15 - 30 amp receptacle

$195
+100 - 2 hrs labor @ $50 hr. (possibly 3 hrs.)
______
$295
+80 - labor for trench

$375
+140 - Intermatic T172R (weatherproof) 240 volt timer

Other considerations are that, if indeed, the circuit is 100 feet, you should consider using a #8 THWN COPPER wire to account for voltage drop (add $60, @ 60 cents a foot) Using a #10 wire at that distance may not allow the kiln to get to the desired temperature.

If you are anticipating things like lights, 120 volt receptacles, fans and such, the best way to do all that is to install a subpanel at the pergoda.

That should get you in the ball park as far as price. Of course, you can make adjustments accordingly. Remember that prices can vary greatly depending upon geographic location. Also, if you call a contractor for an estimate, _after_ they give you the price, _then_ ask how much they will knock off if you dig the trench.

A contractor price of $600 would not be unreasonable.

This is a 220 unit and it must be plugged into a proper 220 volt plugin.
