Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Bought a house with Lennox G12Q3-82-3 furnace. It doesn't look like electronic ignition. A sticker showing AirMedic Electrostatic Air Cleaner says it was installed 10/1992. Doesn't work.

Is there a manual somewhere? I can't see where an air filter can be replaced. The furnace doesn't work at all. I saw something on youtube regarding manually lighting the furnace and replacing the thermoouple. Serial No. says 5881... so maybe the unit was from 1981, and the air cleaner, wherever it is, was installed in 1992? Any information appreciated.

Here's some borrowed info.:
`These are classic symptom of a limit switch opening. Can't guarantee that is what is going on, but here is some things that can cause the limit switch to open:

1) Low air flow. This can be caused by dirty filter, dirty blower wheel, dirty air conditioning evaporator coil, restricted or collapsed ductwork, blower motor running the wrong direction, blower running on too low of a speed, defective limit switch, or a combination of several of these factors. Inspection along with measuring the temperature rise will find most of them.

2) Heat exchanger failure. Split or burned through heat exchanger

3) Over-fired furnace. If you have eliminated everything in section 1 and 2, and the temperature rise through the furnace is still high, you need to check the furnace to make sure it is not burning more fuel than it is designed to burn. If it is a natural gas furnace, you can check the amount of fuel that is being burned by clocking your gas meter.

Here is a link that will tell you how to use your gas meter to calculate the BTU input of your furnace. It should never be more BTU than the furnace's rated input.

The problems you have could be potentially hazardous. If you are not able to aggressively find the problem on your own, you should hire a professional to look at the furnace immediately. The G12 furnace is getting relatively old. If you have never had it professionally inspected (sounds like you haven't), you probably should have a professional look at it immediately.' END QUOTE

electronic ignition or pilot type? assuming electronic ignition, check the airflow sensor for dirt in the peto tube, or a defective sensor, if you hear the high voltage click but have a failed ignition chec that the pilot is being lit, and that the thermopile/infrared sensor is good. one of those is your problem.

Take the numbers from the existing filter. Don't have one, then just measure the width & length of the inside of the filter housing. Use electrostatic filters only if your unit is equipped to energize it.

Furnace computer won't let furnace light

What is the model number? I have an SLP98 (installed on 11/29/2011).... and if I take the cover off the front of the furnace the panel that has the fancy "Lennox" badge on it) you will see two clear round windows about the size of a half dollar (one high on the furnace box and one lower on the blower box.) If you look downward into the window on the blower box you can see a red LED display that will sometimes flash error codes like E228 (one character at a time). If your model has something like this, let me know. I've done some DIY fixes recently out of necessity....and their easy.....and several technicians confessed they didn't know much, if anything, about the newer high effieciency Lennox gas furnaces.

Lennox furnace 17 yeanrs old. flame comes on and the shuts down sometimes right away some times in a few minutes. We have the furnace go down to 58 at night. It takes all day to get back to 67.

Sounds like a dirty flame sensor.
Also 9 degrees is a large swing to recover. Most specialist will advise no more than a 5 degree set back, otherwise recovery time eliminates any savings you may achieve.

I have a Lennox furnace. The pilot light is lit, but the burners do not ignite...no heat to the house as a result

You have a multitude of things it could be.From a open safety switch to a bad gas valve. I need to know what the model number is on the furnace. You can find that by opening the door where the burners and gas valve are and it should have a sticker in it giving model # and serial# . Once I have that I can help you. David- HVAC TECH
