if it is a 4 stroke mower you need a 4T oil. any brand will do although better brands mean better protection. lawn mowers arent too fussed with synthetic or mineral but you need a 4T oil. not actual vehicle engine oil. there is a difference.

if its a 2 stroke any good quality 2 stroke oil works as long as its not marine fortified stuff.the mower should tell you what ratio to use.

What oil is to be used in the crankcase?

Run straight gas and I recommend SAE30 synthetic oil. You can run a multi-viscosity oil, but ONLY if using synthetic; if using conventional ONLY use SAE30.

Hello: I own a poulan,500 series pushmower. The

Always use HD in any engine, especially small ones. Most regular SAE 30 is HD anyway, but nowadays, some is not with recycling and all. May I recommend synthetic? It will clean the engine, lubricate better, allow the engine to run cooler and possibly guarantee no mechanical breakdowns of the engine due to it's superior lubricating quality. Advance Auto Parts has their house brand oil now available in synthetic. . IF using synthetic you can use a muti-viscosity oil, like SAE10-30, but NOT when using conventional oil. If you are steadfast on using conventional oil, always use HD and use SAE30, not multi-viscosity oil.

Lawn mower has smoke coming from it after I put oil in it

You could have rings or valves sticking. You could have a bad crankcase breather. You could have run it too low on oil for too long and caused undue engine wear. The oil should be clear, never black, and the only oil you should use is SAE30 detergent oil. I personally recommend using synthetic oil in ALL internal combustion engines. If you use some in the lawn mower, you can use a multi-viscosity oil, but only SAE30 if using conventional oil. You may have a lot of carbon and varnish on the rings and valves, which allows oil to go places it is not supposed to, causing the smoke. If the smoke is blue, you are burning oil. If the smoke is white, there is too much oil in the engine or there is gas or water in the oil. I do suggest removing and inspecting the spark plug. Plugs will tell you the condition of your engine inside. You may want to clean or replace the plug. Look at these pictures and causes for them for spark plugs. Pull yours out and compare.

Where can I get the type of oil needed for the yard machine(22 in) push mower?

You can use regular SAE 30 weight oil from the auto parts store. If you use multi-viscosity, make sure it is synthetic, otherwise use straight SAE30 oil.

I have a Honda GX 160 5.5 Power washer Model Number: CM2403. What kind of oil should i be using in the engine?

If it has a Briggs engine then use SAE 30 oil. If you run synthetic (which I highly recommend), then SAE 30 or muti-viscosity oil like 10W-30 can be used, but if using conventional oil, only SAE30.

Need the manual for an older model MTD model 604 riding lawn mower Want to change oil. Where's the plug? What grade oil should I use? Bought this mower second hand and it works good

The drain plug is either on the bottom of the crankcase under the deck or on the side of the engine where the square-head bolt is. I realize you won't be able to "tilt" the rider to drain it. I suggest using SAE 30 oil. I also highly suggest you use synthetic. If you use synthetic, you can use a multi-viscosity like SAE 10-30W. But if you use conventional, just plain SAE30. I will need some time to try and find your manual if it is available for a PDF download. Sometimes, you can order a paper copy off of the parts lists menu for the machine if and when you find that listed by an online vendor that carrys parts for an older machine. I will post back if and when I find the manual.

What type of oil to use when changing oil

For any four cycle engine (engines with separate oil and fuel fill locations) use high quality detergents in the following viscosity.

For Briggs & Stratton engines use an SAE30 oil above 40 degrees F (4 C) and below this temperature use 5W-30.

For Tecumseh engines use an SAE30 oil above 32 degrees F (0 C) and below this temperature use 5W-30.

For Kohler L-Head engines use an SAE30 oil above 32 degrees F (0 C) and below this temperature use 5W-30. For Kohler Overhead Valve engines use a 10W-30 above 0 degree F (-18 C), and below this temperature use a 5W-30.

For Honda engines,10W-30 is recommended for general use, and above 55 degrees F (10 C) you can use an SAE 30.

For MTD Brand engines, SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general, all-temperature use.

What type oil to use?

In any engine, the best lubricant is always the wisest choice. Synthetics are more stable at the molecular level than any natural oil product. They offer better lubricity, are resistant to mechanical "shear", high temperature chemical changes and flow better and offer more protection at higher and lower temperatures than any other lubricant.
Of course, if you want to use a conventional oil, it is your option...but shorten up your oil change intervals so that you keep the engine internals protected the best you can.
