Ordinary you do not have to take the deck off if you can run the tractor up on a ramp. Can make one out of 2x6. Run up on the ramp and block wheels then get the wrenches you need and lay down on your back and-work that way. I sharpen mine that way twice a year. I use vice grips and snap on the frame to keep blade from turning.

This is a safety feature that is not that hard to do so i say live with it.You do'nt have to hold it up just pull it up before you start backing up and once your moveing you can let go without it shutting off the deck until the pedel returns to neutral again, all tractor have it by law after a certain date so jumping around it is niot a good idea.

With the blade on and tight, block the blade with a piece of wood or someother means of securing it so it will not turn when you try to remove the nut. I then use a fifteen inch breaker bar and "massage" the bar with a four pound sledge hammer. A few moderate taps and it starts to loosen.

I hope this helps you get it off.

SOURCE: vibrating 38" deck on MTD yardman mower

Hi, first replace the blade spindle bearings, if you had to hit them to free them up the bearings are shot. Secondly, replace the deck belt. Because you engaged the blades with a siezed bearing the belt will have a worn section where the v will be thinner thus causing the vibration as it passes through the pulleys. Regards Phil.

Check the center blade to make sure it spins freely when the deck belt has been removed. The spindle may have frozen up.

Loss of power when blades engaded.

Remove deck belt from blade pulleys and Tri to spin blades by hand. If they don't spin freely, you probably need new spindle bearings but if you do need a new spindle I would replace the whole spindle housing... Just make sure the one (s) you buy has housing, spindle, bearings, nut and washer.

there is a star shaped, or other, pattern on the bottom of the mandrel which fixes it into the blade. this has stripped so the blade is freewheeling on the mandrel. if you cannot remove the blade bolt, I think you are going to have to remove the deck and take it to a fabrication or machine shop to have them remove the blade from the mandrel. then you buy a new mandrel and a new blade, at a small engine repair shop, put it back together. take a picture of the top of the deck before you remove the deck belt so you know how to put it back on after you have the new mandrel bolted in. if it is old you may just want to replace all the mandrels while you are at it. they are less than 50 bucks each.

Cutting blade barring ***

I think that part is called a mandrel, pulley on top and blade on the bottom.
Generally you remove the deck, take off the deck belt, take off the covers, take off the blade, remove the bolts holding the mandrel to the deck. Get a new mandrel at a sears store or small engine repair shop and reassemble in reverse order. May want to do them all while you are at it and save yourself duplication of work next year.

I have a John Deere X300 garden tractor. When going into reverse the deck blades stop cutting unless you pull up on the switch. We have no little kids so safety is not an issue. How do you get around this?...

I have a John Deere X300 lawn tractor with an intermittent starting problem. From time to time, when you turn the key all you get is a click. Battery is connected, headlights work, but starter will not turn. Keep turning key off and on and eventually it starts. Other times, it starts just fine. What parts should I start replacing?

when you put the new blades on did you notice if they were even with each other? the 42" decks have a tendency to "warp" inward on the left side. this causes the left blade to ride at an angle to the right blade - there is a tool to correct this, but not all shops have it - sometimes you can remove the deck, flip it over and wallop the inside edge of the left mandrel until the blades are even - a 2 lb. sledge works well for this

Removing pulleys from 42 inch Craftsman mower deck

Put the blade back on the star on the shaft and tighten it down. Now you have some backup for the pulley nut. You may have to wedge a 2x4 between the blade and deck. THe EASIEST way is get an impact and zip it off. :-)
