SOURCE: maytag gas dryer

This is valid for a Maytag Neptune MDG3000AWW Gas Dryer (I am responding to a problem which was mis-identified as a MDG5500AW Gas Dryer)

NOTE: Motor problems begin intermittantly. They can be temporarilly fixed by blowing out the motor with compressed air. Eventually ALL motors fail. In my case, with six kids it took 10 years for our Maytag motor to fail. YMMV.

  1. Confirm where the burn smell is coming from. This will require you to disassemble the dryer. This is not hard - it will require the following tools:

    crosstip medium screwdriver
    1/4 inch socket
    5/15 inch socket
  2. UNPLUG DRYER
  3. TURN OFF GAS
  4. Disassemble by taking apart the FRONT of the dryer:

    a. Remove the door and opposite side door plugs (crosstip screws)

    b. Remove the front panel - this exposes sheet metal bolts (5/16 inch) some with crosstip on left and right of unit. Set panel aside (right side) WITHOUT unplugging wires

    c. Unscrew all the exposed bolts.

    d. Top bolts left and right secure the unpainted metal hooks which secures the top of dryer. Unscrew these bolts and wiggle the metal retainer hooks off. Lift top and support to create 6 inch gap in the front (top unit hinges in back and has electrical connections - do NOT disconnect wires)

    e. Release belt from pulley by reaching left and under drum (this is out of sight)

    f. gently lift out drum and belt and set aside
  5. This has exposed the interior.
  6. IF your motor still made sounds when pressing the start button, THEN plug the dryer back in and have an assistant press and hold the start button. You press the dryer close door button (on front panel which you set aside) and observe and listen. IF the glow plug in the gas ignition chamber glows bright, it is fine. You may see a slight curl of smoke or smell some smoke from the glow plug. THIS IS NORMAL and indicates your ignition circuit is fine.

Observe the motor. Listen and smell. IF you see smoke from the motor, or IF you hear a "starting sound" but the motor itself doesn't spin, is very slow to start spinning, or makes racket, or it made a noise and then stopped... THEN your motor is burned out. Confirm by sniffing the motor. IF the motor smells burned, THEN your motor is burned out.
  7. IF you determined your motor has burned out, THEN you can replace the motor for around $100. OR you can replace your dryer for > $700. Your choice. It is slightly tricky getting the motor out. Instructions Below.

NOTE: If your motor is burned out it CANNOT be fixed because it is a "double wound motor." The motor must be replaced.
MOTOR REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS
  1. UNPLUG DRYER
  2. TURN OFF GAS
  3. Expose the dryer interior by following instructions above
  4. With the drum out do the following:
  5. Remove the blower cover by unscrewing the 8 screws
  6. Remove the cotter clip securing the front of the blower to the motor spindle (Try using two screwdrivers... You'll need to replace this cotter clip because it will deform)
  7. Remove the wiring harness on the back of the motor
  8. Remove the two motor securing clips holding the motor to the motor support frame (this is tricky - I got them off by leaning on the top of the clip with a heavy screwdriver and a large channel-loc wrench)
  9. Remove the cotter clip between the motor and the blower housing
  10. Remove the two 5/16 inch bolts securing the motor support frame from the motor
  11. Lift out the motor and blower housing
  12. Have an assistant support the plastic blower barrel tines with the motor hanging down and the blower up
  13. Using a hammer and a punch tap the motor spindle (axel) until the blower is free of the motor
  14. Take this motor to your appliance repair center for replacement.
To replace simply reverse these instructions. GOOD LUCK!

SOURCE: Maytag Epic dryer won't start

hi there,

if it beeps it means that the keypad is sending a signal to the control board to start it but it doesn't. since the control board sends a signal to the motor to start the dryer to spin. does the dryer hum?

SOURCE: I have a Maytag Epic Z. The dryer turns on but with no heat

There are several things that can cause this. 1 st the thermal fuse(white plastic piece with 2 wires attached to it, then the igniter, is it glowing orange when you start the dryer, then the flame sensor located on the side of the burner assembly and finally the gas coils located on the gas valve close to the burner assembly. If the igniter is glowing orange and then going out without ignition change the gas coils, Hope this helps,

SOURCE: Maytag DE303 Dryer

first check and make sure the power breaker is on. next the door when it closes there is a safety switch normaly there is a small hole around the frame of the door. when you push on it, you shoud hear a clicking noise. if you don"t, that switch will prevent the tumbler from turning another thing is the belt that goes around the tumbler if it's loose or broken the tumbler will not turn. that can be checked by accessing the bottom panel in the back the belt should be tight. good luck!

SOURCE: how to remove the front panel of a maytag epic z dryer

If your unit is not drying well or slow dry it is being caused by poor external venting rather than internally. first make sure you are not crushing the vent hose behind unit then next clean venting in wall and make sure outside flaps are opening and closing properly before opening up dryer. Easy way to tell if it the machine or venting is to take vent hose off and connect a pair of sheer pantyhose to exhaust port on back of dryer and run a few loads if all works well your issue is in the wall not the machine

Can you tell if the motor comes on? If it does, then it could be a broken belt.

Check and make sure the door button has not broken and fell out. If you see the button sticking out mash it several time hold it in then mash the button. If it is electronic it's probally in the board.
