Take it in for a warranty check
the pressure is still on the compressor pistons and the motor is not big enough to start again
there is a problem with the relief valve in the auto controller that is not dumping the pressure in the compressor or line to the non-return valve in the line
it is to your advantage to drop the pressure to 110 psi and restarts at 75-80 psi as there are very few requirements for 140 psi around the house or shed
what is needed is volume capacity to run air equipment
spray guns , nailers , car tires , grinders ,drills all operate at less than 100 psi but require volume air flow that extra psi does not achieve

There is a part called an unloader. It reduces the pressure on the compressor when the unit stops at the desired pressure. The actual unloader may be part of number 50 in this diagram.

Makita MAC5200 Is leaking air at 140psi until it reach 120 then it can go for days without leaking

So you are saying that at 140 it leaks down to 120 and then it is fine? You need to check for leaks with soapy water and listen closely to the exhause and intake valves when it is off. Check the unloader valve and the regulator assembly.;

Thermo overload switch keeps tripping

Your pressure switch that shuts off the motor isn't working causing the motor to overheat. If you think the pressure switch is ok then the motor may have a shorted winding inside.

Mac 5200 pumps pressure to 140lbs. then blows off pressure until 120lbs is reached. Cut in is about 115lbs. I have replaced main switch and it still does same. Tried small adjustments on mainswicth st

Check your Safety Valve. It is on the back of the tank sometimes on one of the pressure switch ports or on the air manifold. It has a ring on it to pull to relieve pressure from the tank. The spring in these can get overheated so they don't hold air unless the tank gets over 165 psi. When the motor is running hold the center pin in to see if you have the same results. If the valve holds air until you let it go, replace it.

That is the unloader valve and it supposed to release a little bit of air when it stops. That takes the pressure off of the pump which enables it to restart easier.

Compressor runs until overload release valve opens (pressure at 130 psi) and then air escapes until pressure lowers to 100 psi..Then motor begins to restart, but will not , due to 100 psi and kicks breaker...

There is a check valve between the compressor and tank, and there is also an 'unloader valve' which blows the pressure off the compressor so that it starts under little load. I think your check valve is stuck open and the unloader valve is blowing tank pressure off.. and when the compressor tries to start it's starting against the pressure in the tank.

So check/replace/thaw the check valve and you'll be good to go. It's generally at the tank where the line from the compressor head goes into the tank, it'll be between the two somewhere.

if it throws the reset button when starting back up then the pressure release valve is not unloading the delivery pipe
it should make a loud hissing sound when it cuts out at the set pressure

Compressor blows off, does not maintain pressure

Hi there. This is normal. The pressure is set to stop at around 120-140 PSI as a safety measure. It probably kicks in again around 80 PSI so as to remain pressurized between 80 and 140 PSI. Since most air tools operate in this range, it is ok for the compressor to maintain pressure in that range. You do not want to adjust the maximum pressure safety release valve as it could be extremely dangerous as certain components in the compressor may only be rated up to 140 PSI or slightly higher before they fail or blow apart.

I have worked on many makita compressors and have run-across this problem on a few of them. Your compressor has a check valve that is supposed to hold tank pressure after the switch reaches set pressure. There is an unloader valve built into the pressure switch that releases the pressure in the discharge hose after the unit shuts off. The unloader allows the compressor to restart with-out any pressure in the discharge line. If the brass check valve is leaking pressure back into the system, air will leak out of the unloader valve. Follow the discharge line to the tank and you will see the brass check valve. To test valve for fault, run the compressor till it builds around 80 psi and unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Remove the 1/4" hose connector from the check valve and check for air leaking out of the valve. If it is leaking you can order form www.toolpartsdirect.com. or call the makita 1-800 number. The price is about the same. Good Luck on your repair.

NO PSI

have you checked to make sure that keyway is installed between electric motor and pump. also adjustment on unloader valve may be incorrect. If the big brass nut on the unloader is able to be turned by hand, then this is probably your problem (running pressure and spike pressure needs to be set and locked down using a pressure guage). does water come out of nozzle at all? if not, tip being stopped up may be the problem. trash between unloader ball and seat can also cause no pressure (usually caused by a burr left inside brass pieces during the manufacturing process). I have seen all the check valves stuck on a brand new unit from sitting on the shelf for so long, but this is usually the case with General Pumps.
