you can try and plug the speaker set into an old walkman or ipod headphone jack if you have it and see if they work, if they dont work with any other input they are defective so take them back.

That sounds like the action of a thermal shutoff.
If present, these can turn off either the input to the amplifier or the entire power supply if the unit has been driven at high levels.
If you have not had it 'cranked up' and it is shutting down anyhow, the output module(s) may be failing which can cause excessive heat at any level. Sometimes feeling the back of the unit in which the main amp is located will tell you by the amount of heat you sense that one or more of these is dying.
