Blue Toner finishes quicker

Hi, I have a Brother 9420CN printer. It has happened twice that the blue toner finishes way ahead of any other color. I am not a heavy user, neither do I print only in Blue color. I have checked the color settings on the printer, they are on default. Could someone tell me whats wrong

Thanks for the help. I checked further and found that there is a plastic bucket on the right side to collect the waste toner and is full. The color looks like a very dark blue (i guess all toners are mixed up).

My printouts are normal, no blue bands etc.I have replaced blue 2 times till now and never had to change black. Isn't that a bit strange. My guess is its leaking more than usual. So the next question is how to fix that?

  • mbinperth Nov 22, 2007

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes Toner is genuine Brother. No doubt about it. The machine has done 4500 pages and I have had to replace blue 2 times now. No other toner has been replaced.

Is there a way to tell or check how much toner there is in each cartridge?

Also I thought the drum was in the toner cartridge itself and not seperate in this printer.

  • mbinperth Nov 22, 2007

    It says Empty C (Cyan).

Also last time it said empty C, I took the toner out and put it back and it does not say empty Cyan anymore. Although I haven't printed much after that.

How do you enter maintence mode ? There is nothing in the MENU.

  • mbinperth Nov 23, 2007

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

Firstly my total page count is 4500, out of which less than 50% would be color

    Consumables - OPC Belt (70%), Fuser (90%) and 120k Kit (98%)

Out of the 4500 pages, around 800 pages are fax.

My printing is normal - mix of text and graphics, nothing unusual

The test page from the manual is normal and B/W no color.

Not possible that someone else prints anything else.

I didnt quite get this part. I could not find a way to get the page count for each Toner.

There is no toner use counter, they prompt to order(toner low) then demand replacement later(replace toner), they do count how many images of each colour they have printed, it is in service mode, I have service manuals for this machine but need to understand situation here fully before posting any codes in pub

I have already done the calibration. Also thw Blue and all other color settings were in the centre square as you mentioned.

What if the Blue toner is not empty but the printer thinks it is empty and is making me change it sooner? Also could you tell me how to check page count for each specific color cos in the maintenance mode all it says is codes, does not say what they are for.

If Cyan comes up "low" just exit the cartridge and put paper over the sensor holes on the sides using tape. Viola. Works for MFC 9420 cn. Probably works with all 4 cartridges. Dont believe the machine when it says LOW!J

I can't imagine where toner could possible go from one of these sort of cartridges except on to your paper, I had a customer once with the same request and I found on their letter head that they printed with it had a single band of yellow across it hence excess yellow use,,,,,, Do your print runs of anything contain dark bands/underlines? I guess check to see if white background in any prints has a blueish tinge to it, or possiblly somehow black is running out and it is printing the blacks by mixing the colours (Check black block and text to see if it is really black not heaps dark blue to ensure black toner is operating)

next I'd be questioning if cartridges where brother ones?

I am wondering if any of the cartridges are non genuine after market ones, they have been causing lots of problems on these printers, you could try going into properties and selecting grey-scale when printing text documents, I'm thinking that machine is compensating for black by using blue or black is empty but not telling is. Selecting grey-scale printing will stop any possibility of colour being used to isolate fault.

The cartridge would not leak if genuine, the waste toner bottle is fed by drum, fix maybe to change your blue drum. Or to replace black toner cart. if you cant greyscale print.

I need to know if these are genuine brother cartridges or are they aftermarket or refills if so then my time is being wasted solving a problem that will be with your toner,

Hang on, you keep changing the blue are you sure that the machine is asking for blue not black, it would ask for Cyan toner (blue), or Magenta is red, or K is black , Yellow is yellow

We can see how many images each cartridge has done via printer keypad, go into maintence mode and look at image count for each cartridge, K should be way ahead of others,

How old is this machine in months, I get it has done 4500 prints

Perth, And you thought I ran away, here is your user manual download link .... How old is this machine?

You should just replace all starter toners, my bet is that blue is making up for something else cause it is empty, the others are empty or close to it, and removing and reinserting cartridges to avoid replacing toners is probally not helping, these machines are supplied with starter toners and you are still using them except cyan.... they last about 3000 prints they tell you but you must understand that 3000 prints is based on a print with only 5% of the surface coloured in.

There is a seperate drum in these machines (OPC belt) "green thingy behind carts"...what is the status of consumables (print settings page via menu, will tell you.

What are you printing? Text, letterhead, pics, most of. What type of work is this machine doing and what are the last nine digit of the S/N? what is exact page count

I need you answer these questions to help me to help you. If you rang for service on one of these, and you were in my area, I would be the tec attending your call.

Print me a this test page and post it here if possible for me to see

    Menu/Set
, Black Start, Menu/Set, and Up arrow keys in this order

"MAINTENANCE 06" appears on the LCD.

Arrow up till we see MAINTENANCE 09 then press MENU/SET

test page should print ( scan and insert image here if possible ) or post your email/msn so you can send it to me.

Press stop/exit to return to normal. Warning Dont play in maintence mode, you can change settings you would rather not.

Is it possible someone else printing "fishing pics" or "sky shots" ie blue.....without you knowing? lol.

You can run a Colour Calibration might be a good idea, press menu 4 menu 4 menu.

We could check to see if the blue setting is stuffed with by menu 33 menu 33 menu, this adjusts the amount of blue in copies, should be centre square.

We probally should print out user settings so we know how it is setup, "55" same process.

by the end of all that we will have found out you need some of the other toners(all) and once machine gets its counters reset by them she'll be right.

    have fun

if it does this on all colors, try cleaning the laser **** glass located below toner cartridges. you could have drops of toner on it. if only certain colors, visually check your toner cartridge rollers.

Color cartridge

The Brother machine will not print if the message "Toner Empty X" ( X =C for Cyan, M for Magenta, Y for Yellow and K for Black) is displayed on the LCD. The empty toner(s) must be replaced in order to continue printing. Incoming faxes will be stored in the memory until the toner(s) is replaced.
