If you have a dirty filter you should clean it. Back washing is not going to do you any favors. You will get a brief amount of debris flowing after back washing. If it is constant you have holes in your filter grids or cartridges.

Algae dust in pool

I think Brandon's answer deserves a little more time and a slight explanation... as I think it is Spot On!
Algae dust is usually "Already DEAD" algae!
And normally it is way to Small & Fine to be trapped by the filter.
We here on this forum do not know what type of filter you have, But if you do have a "MultiPort" valve as Brandon suggested you turn to the "Waste" mode, you will not use the filter mode to vacuum, as this will only BLOW the Fine Silt like substance right back into your pool, spreading out into the water to be suspended turning your water cloudy if not green, until it settles, and once again you have a covering of Dead Algae Dust on the floor of your pool. But when the filter valve is in Waste mode, you will bypass the filter and the return line altogether and your vacuumed algae silt will be sucked up into the valve, and OUT the valve to waste. And just like that all of the algae dust is vacuumed out and did not Blow back into your pool.
I just had a situation where we cleaned up such a pool where the customer couldn't get the algae out, we came out and vacuumed to waste. And I by chance took a picture of the partially vacuumed pool and Dust remaining.

algae-dust-in-pool-iwrnrkacomuoeuyhvucmvd0t-2-0.jpg If you don't have a multipart valve, then if the pool has no debris but only dust, then and ONLY then, should you use Backwash mode. You NEVER want to vacuum a pool with debris in Backwash mode! NEVER!!! Because the larger debris you are vacuuming will get caught in the internals of your lateral drain assembly or your DE Grids. then it will be very difficult to un clog them, which in turn will reduce proper water filtration efficiency! But the algae dust will be able to pass right on thru. If you have neither of these types of filters because you have a Cartridge style filer, the elements may be able to trap the dust, if it is still to fine to filter, you obtain an additional pool pump, place it pool side, and in the pump out the pump will be two vacuum hoses and away you go.

Good Luck

I have a Hayward S310T filter. It's been running 24/7 for over a month. The water does not appear to be clear, even after floccing. How do I tell if the water is being filtered or if the filter is...

Backwash the filter. If the water coming out of the backwash line is not dirty you need a sand change. If the water is dirty you need to continue let the water filter and back washing once a week. Also make sure the six way is on filter and not recirculate

Started sand filter wrong

Just run it and vacume you will collect all the dust. If you used Zeo sand or like product instead of sand, you will need to backwash, run and backwashtwo or three times.

Be sure it is not plumbed backwards and be sure you got a sand valve as a DE plumbs the other way.

No green comes out in backwash

Alge will quit often go through filter so first you need to kill the alge by super chlornateing the pool. You can take a water sampel to your pool store and give them the size of your pool, they can test your water, for nothing in most cases and recomend what you will need for this. Then you can start cleaning the mess up as the dead alge will turn to dirt. This dirt will be very fine and may go through your filter also so a cup full of D.E. in your skimmer after backwashing will usually coat the top of your sand and catch much finer dust and dirt. Do this as you clean the pool and backwash 1-2 times daily till clean. Follow all directions given to you at store to kill the alge first, this is very importiant.

How do i drain my pool with a hayward variflow pump?

To Flush out the filter with the backwash setting. The backwash setting releases trapped particles from the filter back into the swimming pool. You may need to alternate between the rinse and backwash settings until the water runs clear in order to unblock your filtration system and flush out clogs. To Rinse away dislodged items from the backwash setting. The rinse setting flushes clean water through the pipes and carries away any particles or clogs freed during the backwashing. To Drain the pool select waste on the multiport valve. This sends the water directly to the drain rather than back into the swimming pool. Close the filtration equipment and stop the pump with the closed setting. You should only use the closed setting when you turn the pump off. This function allows you to remove the strainer basket, clean the filter tank and perform other swimming pool maintenance on the filtration system.

How do I backwash my Pentair Vertical Grid DE filter?

For instructions on backwashing and other trouble shooting, you need an Owner's Manual. You can find one online at the following link:

http://www.pentairpool.com/pdfs/FNSPlusVerticalGridDEFilterOM.pdf

The way you backwash this filter is easy once you get the hang of it!

The first thing you will do is turn off the system, change the valve position to the Backwash position. If you have a Multiport Valve, you will press down on the handle and spin it so that the knotch is pointed to BACKWASH. If you have a Slide Valve, only has two positions, up and down, you turn the handle so that the metal pin is out of the holder and move the handle in the opposite direction. You will need to turn the handle to lock the pin into position.

Once this is done, you will turn on your pump. Pentair recommends that you backwash for 1 minute, then turn off the pump.

If you have the Slide Valve, you will put it back into the FILTER position and then turn the pump back on for 1 minute. If you have the Multiport Valve, you will put it in the RINSE position and then turn the pump back on for 1 minute.

Pentair recommends that you do this cycle a total of three times, backwash/rinse, backwash/rinse, backwash/rinse. AFTER the third time, you will need to open the Air Release Valve at the top of the filter while the pump is OFF and the valve position in back on FILTER. Once this is done, turn on the pump. When you have a steady stream of water coming out of the Air Release Valve, close that up. This way you have no air in the system.

Now, you will mix your DE "Slurry" in a bucket. Depending on your model of filter, you will measure out your DE and mix with water to the consistancy of milk. **IF it is just a backwash, you will only add 80% of the original amount of DE. You only add the total 100% of DE when you completely take the filter apart and clean it out.**

You will slowly pour the slurry into the skimmer that is closest to the pump. This will allow the DE to evenly coat the grids in the filter. Wait about 5 minutes and then check the pressure gauge on the filter. Once the PSI reaches 8 to 10 PSI above this number, it is time to backwash.

Are you using the rinse setting for a few seconds following the backwash? If not, once you finish washing, stop the pump, change the valce to rinse, then run it about 3 to 5 seconds. Shut down then switch to filter and the particles should stop coming back to the pool.

No water coming out when I backwash. I cleaned

water level must be about the discharge (eyeball) in the pool to back wash. Check the hose connections to make sure that hoses off the the filer head are going to the right place Look for the words "Pump" , "pool" and "waste" molded into the valve. I've seen it a number of times where "Pump" and "pool" were connected the wrong way.

Hayward pool motor shuts off in backwash mode.

Check the pump suction filter? To backwash it, is to
open the backwash tank cleanout valve, to clear the dirt out. If this does not work, check the pipelines going to the backwash tank for clogged lines.
