How to change the brake band on a 026 stihl

The brake band on the Stihl 026 is very complicated compared to the box store variety chainsaw like the little Poulans or the small Craftsmans etc. First you have to access the brake band by removing the guide bar and chain after loosening the chain tensioner adjustment. With the side cover off, totally clean all the debris from the area and look for three (maybe two) captive screws that remove the cover exposing the chain brake. The handle may have to be removed for this process, but it is very easy to remove. Once the brake cover is removed, again clean all the grunginess and nastiness that has found its way in over the years.

Now, take your digital camera or smart phone and take a few pictures of the brake assembly. As you remove the fasteners, springs, and other parts one by one, take a chronological set of pictures that you will benefit from during re assembly. It, at that point is fairly self-explanatory once you expose it to view.

Trust me about the pictures... they are worth a thousand words once you see the arrangement and number of pieces involved.

Replace mac 610 chain

You need to make sure the chain brake is off, pull the hand guard firmly back to the top handle, once off there should be nothing else holding the cover on, so it is just a case of pulling it off.

Is the band brake nessesary or can i take it off and use the chainsaw

It's totally necessary, stop asking if you can remove it. If you think you can make a better chainsaw than STIHL, then I think you should try, otherwise, don't change anything, you're not an engineer and if you're thinking about removing the most important safety feature of any saw in existence, then maybe you shouldn't be allowed to play with one at all.

I am unable to get the bar and chain off of my Poulan Pro 260 42cc chainsaw because the stud for the clutch brake housing has broken loose inside the housing. When turning the clutch brake nut the clutch...

I ran into the same problem and I "cheated" my way through this. First of all, the thread is metric on the stud. Take an imperial nut and start to thread it on the stud. Don't force it, it will stop after half a turn. Now you hold the imperial nut with a socket or a wrench, and use a flat wrench to undo the other nut(the one that is stuck). It took me 2 minutes to remove it and no damage done at all.

Hope it helps

This sounds like you may have the chain brake stuck on. The hand guard is also a chain brake. release the chain brake by pulling backwards on the handle. If this does not fix the issue remove the clutch by pulling the c-clip and retaining washer. I would look at the bar and chain and make sure they are not bent or damaged. ask a local dealer like for parts or tools you may need. Good luck barterjoe_12.png

The chain is stuck on chain saw. I can't loosen it, it will not rotate when motor is on and the motor will not turn over the blade is stuck

Try taking the chain guide off, so you can remove
the chain. This will free the stucked up chain.
Replace the chain guide, and the chain. Hope this will solve your problem.

You just have to pull the lever back, like it was on the saw, until it clicks/unlocks. It may be hard to do, but thats what has to be done.
