Replace the filter if it has one and the other solution is to run a mixture of vinager and water with some bleach added thru the lines. thats what I usually use on mine i feel the water jug with the mixture and run it thru several cups at a time

GE fridge 1999 model. water started tasting funny. found black stuff in a peice of ice. Water in rest of house seems fine.

Hello there,
When your water starts tasting funny and you can see some kind of particles in the ice, then it means the water filter is dirty and needs to be changed. Try to get the water filter replaced and the funny taste will stop.
If you are having some kind of lime taste or mud taste, or lime deposits or mineral deposit, is simply means you will have to replace the water line and reservior.
Hope this helped. All the best Elect_Comp

A refrigerator without a water filter the water dispenser will not will not work am i right with that question?

Hi, W/D here.
The dispenser will actually work without a filter. I can remove my filter, and put on the temporary seal cap, and I get water!
Older versions of refrigerators were connected to water supplies without filters. What happened was that the water might taste "funny", or be discolored, but mostly, unfiltered water tended to kill ice makers. Nowadays, most refrigerators come with expensive filters. Lots of crafty folks put an in-line filter before the refrigerator to make their expensive filter last longer. The water tastes better too!
Best regards, --W/D--

Hamilton Beach water cooler dysfunction.

Check to see if the dispenser has an integral water filter. If yes, replace it to improve the taste of the water. If no, then unplug and remove the top panel and shut off the water supply line to the unit.

You'll want to drain the cooling tank and clean it with some white vinegar to remove any mineral deposits that could be affecting the taste of the water. You'll want to lightly scrub the inside of the chilling/cooling tank with a mixture of at least 2/3 white vinegar and warm water to help dissolve any residue in the tank.

After you've gotten it as clean as possible, turn on the water supply line and flush the tank by filling a pitcher from the cold water dispenser. Do this for at least 2-3 gallons of water to completely clear out the vinegar mixture.

You'll also want to remove and sanitize the dispenser valves on the front of the unit, as there could be some gunk inside the spout that is adding to the foul taste and odor.

I would also suggest you install an inline charcoal water filter to the supply line serving this cooler, as that will only help improve the taste and clarity of your drinking water.

You should be able to adjust the temp of the cold water with a thermostat controler located inside the cabinent. You might want to contat Hamilton Beach to obtain an owner's manual for your unit to get more detailed information about use and operation recommendations.

Hope you found this info very helpful and best regards!

Ice tastes funny and a strange metallic or plastic type smell

Sometimes the smell comes from something in the freezer or even the refrigeratior and makes the ice taste funny. My suggestion is to clean out the freezer compartment of anything frozen that has been there a while and may have freezer burn. That may be the funny smell you are experiencing.
Hope this will help you.
