I have a trane heat pump. The temperature here is 36. Should I turn on the emergency heat function?

If the thermostat is keeping the house at it's temperature setting, No don't switch to emergency heat.
The emergency heat is a second stage or backup heat when the heat pump can't keep up, the thermostat will automatically switch to the backup heat. The emergency heat will come on during defrost or if the heatpump isn't working, then you can switch to emergency heat.

I have a thermostat RTH9580. Why do I have emergency heat under system AND heat which sometines switch automatically to auxilliary heat?


If you have an air to air heat pump, in colder temperatures, the heat pump will not heat as well as it would in warmer outdoor temperatures making it run longer. the digital thermostats work off of a built in algorithm that kicks on the auxiliary heat when the heat pump runs to long so that it will satisfy the thermostat quicker. This can be tied to the Emergency heat @ the thermostat energizing a few heating elements, or just energizing a separate element from the emergency heat. I always recommend on an air to air heat pump to run the emergency heat when you have consistent Outdoor temperatures below 20 degrees F because you will cycle the heat less by getting hotter heat making life more comfortable, and it costs about the same as running the heat pump since @ those temperatures, it will run all the time.

Thermostat Wiring and Terminal Designations


Here is a list of each common terminal and what their commonly used for. Also listed is what colors are commonly used. NEVER ASSUME these are what you have. Verify all your wires by following each to each piece of equipment. This will help you to be able to match your equipment with the terminal.

- R, Rc, Rh Red wire, hot side of transformer
- C various color wires Usually the common side of transformer
- Y Yellow wire, Energizes the compressor, cooling or heating and cooling for heat pumps
- W White wire, heating for most units
- G Green wire, energizes the fan or blower relay.
- O Orange wire, energizes cooling on most heat pump units
- B Blue and sometimes Orange wire, energizes heat on most heat pump units
- B or X Blue, Black, or Brown wire, the common side of the transformer when the t-stat needs a common. Some brands use B as the common (York, GE, and Trane)
- E Pink, Gray or Tan wires, Emergency heat relay on heat pumps with auxiliary heat
- T Tan or Gray wires, For units with outdoor anticipator reset control (Trane, American Standard, GE, and Carrier)
- W2 Pink, or Brown wires energizes second stage heating on 2 stage units
- Y2 Blue or Pink wires, energizes second stage cooling on 2 stage units
- L Can be most any color, energizes service indicator lamp on units that are equipped with that.

The wires that always cause the most confusion are the B and X wires.
Check out the B terminal first. The NEMA standard for the B terminal to be the heating changeover valve but with some units it is different.

Trane, GE, York and some other manufactures which includes older Honeywell thermostats often use it for the common side of the transformer.
“X” Usually is the standard for common, but just like “B” some manufactures do use “X” or “X2” as the terminal for the emergency heat relay.

My thermostat has both auxillary and emergency light on,both are green,what does that mean?


Aux light; This turns on when the auxiliary (second stage) heating is in operation
It turns on 1-6 F below first stage and is user adjustable

Emergency light; This light turns on whenever the emergency heat is manually selected
(Mode switch is in the EMER position)
While in the emergency Heat mode, the heat pump compressor is off,
and the emergency heat (same as the auxiliary heat) maintains the
set point temperature

If your thermostat has an emergency heat setting this means you have a heat pump system.
Yes you need to set the thermostat to heat for heating the house.
The emergency heat setting should never be used unless your outside unit is not functioning.
The emergency heat setting overides the heat pump (the outside unit will not be energized).
The emergency heat setting will run the auxillary heat (heat strips) only.
When the thermostat is set in the heat position the heat pump will run to heat your house.
If the heat pump can't keep up (extreme cold) then then the auxillary heat will kick in to augment the heat pump until it satisfies the thermostat settings. If your room temperature gets 2 degrees below your thermostat setpoint, your auxillary heat will kick on. Example, say you are going to be gone a couple of days and you turn your heat down to 60 degrees. When you return and it is 60 degrees in your house, you turn the thermostat up to 70 degrees. Since you are turning the temperature up 2 degrees or more (10 degrees in this case) from the 60 degree room temperature then the heat pump will come on and the auxillary heat strips. The unit will continue heating like this until the temperature in the house gets to 69 degrees and the heat strips will turn off and the heat pump will continue to run until the 70 degree setpoint is reached.

you can switch the thermostat to "emergency heat" which will turn the outdoor section off and the thermostat will control the electric heat elements in the air handler if it has them.

I only have two settings. Which is which and how so?


I think you probably have a heat pump. Aux heat is electrical resistance heat coils that produce heat when the heat pump can not produce enough to keep the temperature up (caused by low outside temperature or a problem with the refrigerant system). This resistance heat can be switched on by the emerg. heat button. It also can come on automaticlly (sp) and will be indicated by the aux being shown on the thermostat. Sometime if you set the heat up several degrees by thermostat the aux will come on to help the system catch up to the desired temperature setting. The emerg. heat is a way to turn on the AUX manually. If you do not have a heat pump system then it is possible that you have a heat pump thermostat installed on a non heat pump system. Emergency heat and Aux are both the secondary.

Trane weathertron thermosatat


OK. Here is a Trane Weathertron BAYSTAT240 thermostat wiring picture. This heat pump w/ electric (emergency) heaters is running right now. Notice the G terminal has green wire, the R terminal has red wire, the white wire is jumpered from W to X2, etc. The black wire loop you see in the center hole is unconnected.

This unit is adjusted by leveling the base - loosen the screw to the left of "R" and the one to the right of "F". Twist the base clockwise to RAISE the indicator. This makes the mercury in the switch turn ON at a different temperature. Remember to tighten those 2 screws again.

You will have to experiment several times to make the unit read exactly right. If the tech installed the base exactly level, the unit would read right (it says here).

Your second stage heat check the dip switches on the board and the wires to the proper two stage heat t-stat.
