To remove the blades from a tiller, all you need to do is pull the pins out of the blades at the shaft and remove the offending blade. If it is an inner blade, it too will have a pin. The pins have a head on one end, pass through the shaft, and a locking pin through the other end.

Oops, I came back and find that the heading was for a tiller, and you are needing info on a mower....

FR23467 (above) is right. The only thing that I would add here is that the bolts come off much easier with an impact gun. Make sure that you keep your body parts out of the swing path of the blade. Safer still to lock the blade down.

My 42 inch Toro seems to be cutting unevenly. The blades seem to be on correctly and I hope I haven't hit something to set the angle wrong

First thing to check is that the deck is level by the adjustments on wheels. Then check the bearings in the spindle housings and there is no play in the shaft when you try to move blade up and down. You then can measure from the blade tip bottom of deck on both sides (3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, and then 12 o'clock and 6'o clock They should all be the same. If not then either the shaft is bent, or the deck is bent slightly causing the blade not being parallel to the deck. If you have someone rotate the shaft you should be able to tell if the shaft is bent or not. If the deck is bent, then you will have to straighten it out till the spindle shaft is perpendicular to deck.

try pushing the blade up into the deck,,,if there is any lift in it there is the fault,,the top nut has come off the blabe drive pully and let the drive shaft drop a little this will lower the cutting blade,,,fix it before the blade falls right out

Left side blade cuts about an inch lower than right side , the left 21" when cutting is about an inch lower than the right 21", looks terrible, checked tire pressure and that was not the problem

measure the height of cut from the ground to the bottom of the deck all the way around, if it is the same the blade or bearing housing is at fault, if it is lower on the left look for a bent or broken mount from the deck to the tractor on that side.

I have a feeling that the bearings were damaged when they hit. The new blades are ok, but the bearings are growling and I don't know what is causing the engine to shut off. I would pull the deck off, check out the bearings, replace them if needed, just wobble the blade back and forth, it shouldn't move, should be tight, Take off the belt and spin the blade by hand, and see if it growls. It could be the drive pulley bearings that went, check them out too. hope this helps.

Removing pulleys from 42 inch Craftsman mower deck

Put the blade back on the star on the shaft and tighten it down. Now you have some backup for the pulley nut. You may have to wedge a 2x4 between the blade and deck. THe EASIEST way is get an impact and zip it off. :-)
