SOURCE: Rinnai heater turns itself off

Dannizen,

You could have something as simple as an air hose off, or a piece of carbon on the flame sensor. Your problem could also be a gas valve , which is much more complicated. If you are handy with tools you could be able fix either quickly. If you’re not good with tools you will need to get some help. Either way you have to have some back ground info on your heater. Get in touch with Rinnai and get a service manual for your unit. They cost around $15. If you have to call a service guy, use the Rinnai web site to find an authorized service person. Don’t just let your fingers do the walking and get some guy who has no idea what a Rinnai is. You’re only asking for trouble there. Your unit is a little older so don’t be surprised if parts are hard to find.

Good luck,

My Rinnai 1001F has just developed a loud rattle when turned on. What's the most common problem and who fixes in Manchester NH?

There are two fans or blowers in your unit. The first to turn on prior to the flame starting. The second fan blows out hot air into the room. Depending upon when the rattle starts will dictate which fan is causing the rattle. Any good gas company should be able to help you out.

I get a blinking light with the number 12 flashing on my rinnai heater

With the unit turned off, hold down on the economy button, the up arrow and down arrow all at the same time for three seconds. A number of error codes will start flashing. Copy the numbers down and repost them so we can help you. I suspect a dirty flame rod or poor gas pressure. Can you give us any info on when it fails or does it light when you turn off and back on?

Can you vent the Rinnai 551F vertically through ceiling?

This unit can be vented through the roof but requires a specialized flue system-do not use an existing flue connection. Call a contractor - have them check and see if the unit can be modified to a vertical flue- it will require the existing piping to be replaced--Not a job for a do-it yourselfer

Rinnai Propane tankless Water Heaters R85e-1

Piping of these heaters in tandem is critical. Specified by Rinnai in their design manual, the cold water should be piped to both water heaters with a back-flow presenter installed before the first heater. The hot out piping should be "Tee-d" together and going to your hot water needs.

If piped as per the manual, try turning the water off to only one of the units. Turn on a hot water tap and see if the unit stays on without interruption. Then try the same on the second unit. You may find that one unit has a bad flow control, which is shutting off the flow of water.

You can get more technical help y contacting Rinnai direct at 1-800-621-9419 ext. 207.

Rinnai 1004 fa not lighting

This heater needs some back pressure on the exhaust to work so while it is on your bench, take the reducing coupling found on your vent system and put it on the exhaust pipe to restrict the outlet size. Now cycle the heater with the front cover off and with both of the small rectangle viewing ports off so you can see the flame. The heater fan will start to turn closing the contacts on that little square pressure switch. If it does not close you will get this error code. Make sure the small hoses are attached to the switch and the exhaust system. If you hear some clicking going on at the gas valve you can assume that the pressure switch is closing. The gas valve will energize and send gas to the burner. Look for flame. There is a small probe that will sence flame within a few seconds and keep the unit on. If it doesn't, it will turn the unit off within 3-5 seconds. I suspect that a spider has set up shop somewhere within the heater and either restricting the flow of air to the pressure switch, the burner or you may have a bad pressure switch. If you need a switch, I can send you one for $15. Contact me at "the_rinnai-guy@hotmail.com".
