Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off.
I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with
the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the
printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.

There are several things that can cause this. The easiest thing that you can fix is to make sure the presuure is on in the fuser. Open the left side door. The fuser is the hot part at the top.right. There are two tabs, one at the fron and one at the back. Make sure these are LOOSE. If they are locked down it removes pressure from the fuser and it will smear the copies. The other things that can cause this are drum wear, bad or worn developer, etc, but those need a technician to change.
