Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Model number RP249UA , HP PAVILION NOTEBOOK PC DV9233CL purchased January 2007. The screen turned completly white suddenly. It does not even display on external monitor. It is out of warranty and I need to fix the laptop. The laptop was not dropped or received any damage. it is in impecable condition otherwise.

The laptop starts OK, the screen completly has white pixels and I can not see anything else. I can see the hard drive spinning, however, when I boot it. I tried an HDMI external video display (my LCD TV) and could not display anything.

Your solution (if I understood correctly) is trying to get me to start the laptop? Did I miss understand?

I know about the Fn and F8 combo to display to external monitor. It did not work either. No display (black screen) on external monitor.

Screen white sounds like a video adapter failure.

unplug and take battery out. open up the memory cover in the bottom ofthe laptop, take both memory modules out from the laptop, now with nomemory plug in the power adapter and try starting up, wait 1 minute andturn the laptop off, now place one of the memory modules back into thelaptop and try starting up again, remember to unplug the power whenyour connecting or disconnecting parts from the laptop.

Does thelaptop start up? If not, then take the ram module out from the laptopagain, this time place it on the other memory slot and try again. If itstill doesn't start up repeat the above with the other memory module ifyou have two.

if theres no improvement take the laptop apart, just disconnect allextra not required components of the laptop, modem, wireless, dvd, etc.

see if it boots up with just motherboard, cpu, cpuheatsink, other heatsinks, and one memory ram module, on power adapter.

ifit doesn't start up, reseat the cpu you may also want to replace thethermal grease between the cpu and the heatsink, remember to wipe theold gease off, use DRY toilet paper or similiar, DO NOT USE WATER.

Ifthe machine still doesn't work at all, it appears to be either themotherboard or the video adapter on the mainboard that has failedpossibly due to overheating. You will most likely have to replace thewhole mainboard. I would take the laptop to a local professional toconfirm the fault.

or you could possibly buy a card like this

shouldcome with a good manual of the code meanings, plug it in to thecomputer on the mini pci slot or the printer port and use USB forpower, USB NOT NEEDED WHEN USING INTERNAL MINI PCI SLOT.

thecodes that come up and the manual will point us to the direction of theproblem. It does not guarantee that we can fix it. It helps in doingdiagnosis at home and then replacing the part that is found faulty.

I'mpretty sure the issue is the mainboard or the video adapter. take it toa local professional to confirm the issue as I can't test your laptopover the internet.

Oh I'm sorry I understood that it didn't start up at all.

IF the screen is completely white, the cable(s) between the display and the mainboard could have become loose or cut, aside from a faulty display or poor connection, the video adapter on the mainboard is not working properly, you could possibly test the laptop with another display that fits into its connectors, might be easier just to take it to a local professional than to purchase or look up a replacement display for it.

The mainboard may need to be replaced as the video adapter in most laptops is build into the same board.

Also you may be able to get picture into the external monitor by pressing a button combination FN + (look at the F1 to F12 keys, one of them might have a icon for external display) I'll check which button it is and get back to you in a minute.

here is the service manual for your machine, if you want to check the cables between the display and the mainboard you will find instructions inside on how to take the laptop apart and check them.

Have the HP check the video card driver. having a plain white screen with no icons or wallpaper means there's something wrong with the video card driver or the hardware itself.

Im on a laptop and the back light usually just flickers but the screen has gone dark and i have to use a flashlight to see the screen.

Replace the Inverter, rickeyjsmith.

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. An additional light source is needed.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Lamp = Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale in physical size.
(Average size is 3 to 5 inches long, and half the diameter of a No.2 pencil)

An Inverter is used to provide power to the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

90 PERCENT of the time the Inverter is the problem.

Which is a Good thing.
The Backlight is located inside the metal frame that hold the LCD panel layers together.
Usually on one side of the LCD screen.
{Some LCD screens require Two Backlights}

Replacing a Backlight is a job for a trained repair person.
The LCD screen is a composite of layers.

A lot of times the LCD screen is replaced for Backlight replacement, because some LCD screens require this.

Backlights cost more than an Inverter, and of course an LCD screen costs much more.

This is an example of an Inverter for an HP pavilion dv2000 series Notebook PC,

The above is ONLY an example.
An Inverter MUST be matched to THE LCD screen.

Stating Pavilion dv2000 is only stating the series.
The EXACT Product Number is located on the bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.
P/N = Product Number

Also, there is an HP part number on the Inverter.
Match the HP part number to the listing for the Inverter you are going to purchase.

A reputable seller will list THE HP part number so that the buyer will purchase THE correct Inverter.

How to replace an Inverter in an HP Pavilion dv2000 series Notebook PC;

1) Service Manual

I'm going to use the HP pavilion dv2000 CTO Notebook PC as an example.
The Service Manual is the same for All of the Pavilion dv2000 series of Notebook PC's,

On this page click on the file name >
HP Pavilion dv2000 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide.

After you click on the above link it may take up to 30 seconds, or more, to see the first page.
In the meantime you will be viewing a blank white page.
The PDF file is downloading in the background.

In the Bookmarks menu to the left, click on the + sign to the left of >
Maintenance and Service Guide.

Click on the + sign next to > Removal and Replacement Preliminaries
Read up on Anti-Static Precautions

Now go back, and click on the + sign next to >
Removal and Replacement Procedures.

Scroll the sidebar down, and click on > 5.12 Display Assembly

Direct information on replacing the Inverter is on Page 152.
(Page Number Box at the top of the PDF file, to the right of the blue Down Arrow)

I use a computer pick to ease up on one side of the rubber Screw Covers. You may have a similar device you can use.
If you are careful with the rubber Screw Covers, you can reuse them.
There is a contact cement on the covers.

Lay them down glue side up on a piece of paper.
(They do like to stick to the computer pick, and your fingers, however. Giving you a 'heads-up'.
Try to keep the glue side from picking up debris, however)

If you need guidance, no matter what it is concerning this procedure, please post in a Comment.

I have HP pavilion dv6000 but can't get the best drivers for its webcam. Please advise.

Go to and enter the info of your laptop. I know that you have a dv6000, but there are actually several different versions of the dv6000 that HP made. Look at the bottom of your laptop and you should see a white sticker on there with warranty info. That sticker should also have the actual model number of the laptop there too. When prompted for the model number on the website, input the number from the bottom of your laptop. You should end up at a screen with all of the factory drivers for your laptop. Just download them to your desktop and then run them. Here's an extra note: some of the webcams from the Pavilion dvxxxx series will only function thru RealPlayer.

Pavilion dv6000t screen won't come on.

I had this exact problem with a customers computer andi found out that HP put faulty motherboards in the DV6000, DV9000, Compaq V6000 Series Computers. Thankfully HP fixing all computers for free and extending the warranty even if the warranty has expired they will ship you a box and you ship it off and they fix it at no cost. the turn around period is about 7 days.

Here is a link to an article that talks about it

Hope this helps!

HP Pavilion DV2000 running very slowly

Yes! I would not recommend anything below 2GB at minimum. I have one laptop with 2GB and one with 3GB: they both open programs and browse the internet very quickly. Even with just two programs open (Internet Explorer and Outlook 2007) it uses 1.1GB of memory.

Definitely upgrade your memory. I recommend this site:

Just pick your model and they recommend the memory to pruchase. TIP: order with next day shipping - it's only $10. The free shipping takes 14 days. So unless you're patient (I'm not) the $10 many be worth it.

For solving blue screen error

HP Notebook PCs - "Windows Unsafe or Sudden Shutdown" Blue Screen Error Occurs During Startup or Boot

Windows XP may not start and the following error message may appear on a blue screen:
Windows Unsafe or Sudden Shutdown
This error occurs after Windows was not shutdown using a safe method. The notebook may have been turned off without clicking Shut Down or briefly pressing the computers Power button. The power may have been suddenly disconnected from the computer or the Power button may have been held for more than 5 seconds.
An unsafe shutdown can damage some of the Windows system files, preventing the computer from starting properly.
If the error occurs allow the operating system to complete a check of the hard disk. Windows will prompt your to run CHKDSK. CHKDSK scans the hard drive for damaged files and repairs the files if necessary. The scan may take up to an hour depending on the size of the hard drive and the number of damaged files. The computer will restart when the scan is complete and Windows should start normally.
If Windows will not start or the computer will not boot after the scan is complete see: HP Notebook PCs - Troubleshooting a Startup or No Boot Problem (In English)
