SOURCE: The acrylic diffuser on the fluorescent fixture in

I recommend you buy a complete new fixture. If you can still find the same model, just install the lens and you are done $100 to $150. If you can't find the exact one, a lithonia lite UFC looks close. They are not difficult to install if you know how to turn off your circuit breaker and turn a screw driver. Price again, $100 to. $ $150 at a big box store. If you order it from a specialty lighting store, you might be able to talk them into free installation since you are paying a premium price. Basically, it will cost the lighting manufacturer the same to produce and ship a new lessor a complete fixture. You may as well save yourself the headache and play the same game as the manufacturer - just buy a whole new unit. Also buy local, these fixtures are not packaged to survive a fedEx shipment. Good luck -mark

I have a T12 fluorescent light fixture and replaced the bulbs and ballast. I have double checked all the wiring connections. I get the bulbs to light when I move the bulbs, but only for a second.

Your description sounds like the connectors for the tubes. Also RECHECK wiring. Different on newer ballasts. See below...

Turn off fixture, unplug, or deactivate fuse...

Pull out bulbs and the tin fixture cover/reflector.
Extract the bulb connector. Go to hardware and buy 4 more, and just replace them. The connections fail where the wire connects and the rigours of bulb replacements damage this piece. TONS easier to get new pieces.

ALSO!!!! many new (fancy schmancy) ballasts WIRE UP completely differently from the old ballast. Follow the wiring diagram on the NEW ballast. This detail trips up many.

How do I open the fixture box on a fluorescent light

if its an old 2/4 or 8 foot tube light , these used the shade as part of the housing this is where the ballast /starter is located and other wiring is there too , to remove these old type , remove bulbs by gently twisting 1/4 turn and allowing tube ends to drop free(hold on to bulb !!) remove all bulbs this way , then locate the end where you'll see a nut , there's only one on one end , sometimes on fancy decorator lights they make the nut seem as part of the ornation of shade, but a carefull look and you will see the seams that make it removable , unscrew this and shade end will drop away , the trailing end will unhook when shade is aprox 33 degrees angle away from light these old fixtures can be quite heavy so be prepared for weight ! make sure you disconnect any power to light before working on anything inside of it ,including tube ends ,as I find these are whats bad most times (cracks)

The light diffuser cover is broken. The model number of the range hood is HO60488. The range hood dates back to possibly the late 1950's when the house was built.

When faced with the total unavailability of replacement parts, its time to get creative, and make your own diffuser cover. Flat ones
can be easily made - find anything plastic that's semi-translucent (like a plastic milk bottle), and cut it with a utility knife.
I have also used a utility knife to cut a polystyrene diffuser cover
originally intended for a 2-ft x 4-ft suspended ceiling fluorescent light fixture.
In case the diffuser cover you make wants to burn when placed close to a light bulb, replace the bulb with a CFL (compact fluorescent) bulb, which run MUCH cooler than incandescent light bulbs.
Old lampshades can be cut and used, but may need to be ironed flat. The major advantage of lampshade material is that
it can be folded over at the edge once or twice, which will fill space - and possibly hold the cover where a plastic sheet might be too loose.
You'll know that your efforts have met with success when you can easily remove your ne diffuser cover to replace the light bulb.
