Question about Tecumseh Horizontal Tiller Engine 8 Hp, 1" X 2 57/64" Shaft, Modelno. Hm80 - 155656x

Tecumseh 17.5 hp ohv engine won't start

I have cleaned fuel tank. Removed carb and sprayed out every oriface with cleaner and blew with compressed air. Gaskets are ok. Float bowl fills with fuel. Engine will run for a few seconds and die when I spray starting fluid into carb, so I know I have spark. I am apparently not getting fuel up into the carb. I also unscrewed a small electric solenoid from the bottom of the float bowl. When 12 volts is applied, the small stem pulls in. What could my problem be?

4.5 hp Tecumseh sprays gas from carb while running poorly. Compression feels low.

indicates a worn cylinder and ring failure
as small engines suffer from a dusting problem from inefficient air filters and lack of service problems they tend to wear out well before a reasonable period of time
Most are not economical to repair as new motors are close to rebuild costs

17 hp briggs stratton ohc

Clean or change air filter. Clean, gap or change spark plug. Empty gas tank add fresh gas with Stabil. When spark plug is removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray starter fluid in spark plug hole before replacing spark plug. Clean outside of carb so choke works freely. Spray starter fluid into carb breather hole with air filter removed and try to start. if running replace air filter and cover. If no start disassemble carb and clean. If no start replace carb.

I have cleaned the carb for 20 hp briggs and stratton engine and still cant get it to run

Not sure what you mean by 'run'. Engine needs fuel, spark and air to run. And the fuel has to be in an exact proportion to the air.
Air is easy, temporarily remove the air filter.
Fuel is tougher - I would recommend you get starting fluid and spray down the carb (now that you have air cleaner removed).
Spark is toughest. There are some tools that can verify there is a spark and there are some more expensive tools to verify the strength of the spark.
If you have spark, the engine should at least fire up. If the engine dies a few seconds later, you don't have fuel flow. Carburetor is still not working.
Is the carburetor fuel bowl full of gasoline? If not, check filter and needle and seat.
If you have fuel, make sure the jets are clean. The carb sucks fuel out of the bowl via jets. This empties into the carb's venturi (the throat). Take spray cleaner and spray down the little passage in the throat (not into the engine) and you should see the cleaner spray into the fuel bowl. If not, try spraying through the jets and watch the spray come into the venturi.
When air enters the engine, it causes a vacuum that sucks the fuel out. This is physics. The only way it doesn't work is if there is a clog in the system.

MTD 5hp. Starting and running only while I spray

Remove the fuel line from the carb. Drain fuel tank and blow thru fuel line until clear. If you use compressed air be very careful to use LOW pressure. I just use my mouth. reinstall fuel line replace the fuel filter, add a new spark plug for good measure and refill gas tank

You should be chipping away right soon!

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

Having problem starting and keeping engine running. Spray engine starter fluid and runs for couple of minutes then dies. Acts as if its not getting fuel. It is a 13.5 briggs and stratton engine. Could it...

some have fuel filter some do not , but it sounds like you have contaminated fuel and is is clogging up fuel line or carburetor, look into gas tank with a flash light and see if there are specs floating at bottom of the tank, if there are drain tank of all gas and remove tank and flush it out with brake cleaner, then disconnect both ends of fuel line and spray through tube into white paper towel until u see no dirt/debris. then remove air filter clean foam( soapy water, dry re-oil 10w30 is ok). remove carb from engine spray through main port with carb cleaner not brake cleaner, and use tube and spray through inlet tube while holding throttle wide open reassemble and it should run fine, if not u may need to disassemble carb if not comfortable with this then order new one usually under $100
