How do I replace the brushes on a Skin 3400 table saw?

Motor began to smoke. I turned it off and when I later started it, it ran rough and then completely quit.

Motorhouse + electric field are the first parts that become defect almost by a defect bearing ,or by overload or combination a dull blade together the armature itself is often still intact, compare the collectors on the armature on low ohm measurement if they have almost exactly the same resistance value replace the bearing on the commutator side if thats worn/damaged. replace motorhouse always in high priority if the bearing has melting its seat in the house, and but if the armature has become bad with bad collectors replace it together with always the electric field and with the drivegear part together. IF ALL TOGETHER MAKE IT WORTH TO REPAIR ONLY.

SOURCE: 1991 Subaru Loyale- oil in air intake

There are only a few things that cause oil in the intake, most common is a plugged PCV (Positive Crankcase ventilation Valve), this causes pressure to build from the combustion process and forces oil into the air cleaner/air intake system, and in some cases out the oil seals, another issue is excessive engine blow-by, this is when the piston rings don't seal anymore and the pressure once again builds and forces oil into the air intake, the last and easiest to fix is an overfilled crankcase. Excessive oil burning of any kind will destroy the catalytic converter in a short period of time. How many many miles on the car, does it have excessive blow-by?

SOURCE: my truck blows white smoke

Hello!
There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).
Good Luck

was the check engine light on? have it scanned for a code if it was. remove the timing cover just enough to peek and just make sure the timing belt isnt broken. do you smell gas coming out of the exhaust while cranking the engine for 10 seconds? if not it could be gas related. or pull one of the plug wires off a spark plug and hold it a 1/4 inch or a little less away from the engine ground (ANY METAL PART OF THE ENGINE)see if it archs while cranking for 5 seconds, if it does not arch suspect that the camm and or crank sensor is a bad. PLEASE NOTE: this information is based on what you have told me. however if you have it scanned and give me the code pulled i will be better equipped to help you. if u run the tests i gave you and come up with nothing you may have to take it to your local technician for more complex tests to be done.

Looking for cost of replacement motor for skilsaw model 3400 13amp for 10" table saw and where to buy from? Also, is there a 15amp replacement motor that would bolt right in to replace?

i looked online at places I get parts from. Neither listed the motor as a part the had the aramature for about $70 and the field for about $35. Have you tried the reset button? also it may just need new brushes.(if you see lots of sparks at the end of the motor opposite the blade, look through the air vent slots it is likely the brushes, unplug the saw, and take them out and replace them HERE is a blow up ) the I would think that if the saw is well used and the motor has burnt out. It may be a lost cause. I am not sure what the price of this was new but you can get a reconditioned saw from Amazon for 135 bucks. And it is a 15 amp saw.

There is no fuse in the Skil 3400 saw. Check your cord, then brushes. You might have a broken brush spring, causing one brush to hang up in brush tube. Possibly there maybe a lot of sawdust holding a brush up.

Bosch table saw model 4000. Brushes where sparking alot .

It sounds like the armature is gone, if you are lucky the field coil is ok. Pull the back of the motor off and have a look at the armature where the brushes run if it looks burned or really rough the armature is gone and must be repalced.

Bosch 4000 tablesaw won't start. Brushes replaced

I found that the remaining problem was a intermittent at the switch, which disassembly and cleaning resolved.
Tilting the motor / blade assembly down allows access from below, to the 3 screws fastening the controller circuit board cover on the brush end of the motor. From there, one can easily test exposed wires for power supply, see that brushes are contacting and clean accumulated sawdust.

Hello, the brushes are two gray sprung loaded electrical conductors. They are located on the inner main spindel of the motor (armature), when they start to wear out you will find that most electrical motors will slow down in revolutions. Experience has taught me that when an electrical motor emits smoke it has normally burnded out the armature. This in all honesty is not worth fixing as it is an expensive job, it is cheaper to buy a new saw. Sorry to convey bad news but I hope this clarifies thing for you.

I would check to see that ID of the blade arbor matches the OD of the motor arbor, and you are not missing an adapter ring. Then I would get some acetone and a wire brush clean all surfaces where the blade seats. This is also good practice for Jacobs chucks on drills, that allow the drill bits to spin.

Hi , i have a skilsaw 3400,but the blade is to hard when hand turning it, want to know if it uses ball bearing or another stuff. thanks. pedro pm24h@yahoo.es.

If it is direct drive blade mounted to motor) you will have to remove the motor and check the bearings. Most newer electric motors have sealed bearings. I would suggest that you remove the motor and take it ot an electrical shop (call around first) and have them replace the bearings, clean it up and replace the carbon brushes. Anothe alternative is look for a replacement motor through places like Grangers, Norther Tools, etc.

If it is belt driving check all the components (pulle bearings, etc) for friction.

good luck....gary
