John Deere eztrak mower went over a rock today and now the mower won't engage

hmm strange are the belts driving the blades ok if so then the PTO could be damaged but if there's no sign of damage it maybe a bit frozen up/locked up have the engien off but turn the key on and engage the PTO switch and manually turn the PTO (not by the blades please....dont want to have your hand taken off) turn by the PTO itself and if you hear any clicking sound disengage the PTO and engage a few times to ensure your hearing the clicking sound of the PTO turning on and off and it should be back to normal also check any connections going to the PTO before doing the manual work of repairing the PTO

Engine seems to run fine but when pto is engaged engine loses power

whatever the pto is hooked to,is putting pressure on it and slowing it down,if its a deck, then the spindles are bad or binding, blades need to turn freely

On john deere la150, if i sit on seat and engage blades,,,nothing, but when i lift of seat, blades engage and motor shuts off. Replaced seat switch and did not fix problem

"On john deere la150, if i sit on seat and engage blades,,,nothing, but when i lift of seat, blades engage and motor shuts off. Replaced seat switch and did not fix problem" Okay, what I'm hearing is that "nothing" means the blades-driving PTO won't engage (declutch) when you switch on mower; but then, (say) as you start to dismount the mower (seat) the mower (drive clutch) engages even as the deadman switch (seat switch) kills the engine (and the drive/pto shaft starts to slow down. The key here seems to be that at full engine torque the clutch is unable to remain engaged but, rather, slips so that mower blade inertia (resistence) cannot be overcome...but as engine/pto rotation slows the clutch is able not to slip. First place to consider is the clutch gap which is probably to0 large (possibly from wear and tear, possibly not). So check specs and how-to from manual or factory and reset the pto drive clutch gap...not hard to do. If clutch gap is not the problem then most likely rehab or replacement of the clutch assy will be needed...is the mower has many years use sufficient to wear out the clutch. Another possiblity is an electic (wring/switching/grounding) problem involving mower and deadman switches.

electric pto clutches go bad, turn your ignition switch to the on position and turn your your pto switch on and see if you hear a click if you do that is the pto working if not check and see if you have a fuse for the pto i have seen switches go bad and it could be the pto clutch it self

If its a manual engage the lever tightens up the belt by sliding a pully against the belt

Pto not working blades not engaging

You can hotwire the clutch and see if it clicks, rule out the switch or the safety. If you take the wires apart and jump them, with the battery, it should klik, if not, the clutch is shot, time for a new one, If it clicks, then the switch or the safety is bad. All the parts are available online or ebay, or craigslist. The new ones are expensive. Check it out, hope this helps.

I have a poulan pro 18hp 42 in deck . when i activate the mower blades the blades wont turn. the handle to activate the blades is really hard to put into posistion. any help would be needed, thank you gary...

You didn't mention whether it was electric or manual, most mowers are electric, they have a switch on the dash for the PTO on the bottom of the engine, all it does is make a connection, to a solenoid which jumps a magnet to drive the pulley for the mowing deck. You can take the 2 wires off the switch and jump them with each other to see if the switch has gone bad. You can also jump the wires from the PTO to a battery and see if the pto is any good, you will hear it click. If it is manual, it might just be rusted up under there or gummed up with something making hard to move, but if it doesn't work, is the belt gone? You will have to get under there and check it out. Hope this helps.

Cub Cadet-Blades won't stay engaged

sounds like either a saftey switch problem or a bad drive clutch on the pto. usuallly the mower shuts down, not the blades, they may have changed this though. my best guess would be a safety sensor try calling your local cub dealer and talking to the repair person he can shed light on the problem.

Blades won't engage. OK-I need a pto clutch

A switch should only be about $25. Before you spring for a new PTO assembly, take your switch out and take it to a shop and have it tested. I may just be a bad switch. Don't bother taking it to Sears though. Take it to a shop that works on Husqvarna and/or Poulan Pro. (Both basically same as Craftsman). DO take the model number from under the seat with you.
