It could be the wires or switch in the hose and/or the connection between the hose and the vacuum. It could be the power cord or a loose or bad wire inside the canister. It could be the carbon brushes in the motor are worn out. To find a short or electrical problem you need to know how to trace the power flow from the plug and cord all the way to the motor. You can test the wiring in the hose with an electrical tester to see if there is a problem with it before you purchase a new one.

The lead on our machine is becoming frayed - is it possible to replace the lead and if so, how is it achieved? John Tuffley

If you are refering to the Electrical Power Cord? Yes, this can be easily replaced or repaired.
Depending upon where the cord is damaged, you can either cut it a little shorter and install a replacement electrical plug end (available at any electrical parts store (Lowes, Home Depot, Radio Shack, etc) for about $2.50.
Or if the cord is damaged near the vacuum, you can purchase another cord or even make up one yourself how ever long you want it within reason.

Electric short

Remove the electrical cord and check the conituity for a short. If one replace the cord. If no short is found the motor is fried although the switch would have to be on when it smokes so I think you have a bad cord

Electrical short in handle

When you say there's a short in the handle, this can really be one of two things. It can either be the switch, or the cord.

Here's a link to repair that I did on how to replace the switch on your Dyson DC07:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t4576474-power_button_stay_down

And here's the repair that I did that shows you how to replace the cord on the Dyson:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t4560429-no_power_dyson_animal

This can really only be the two things that have an electrical short in the handle.

I hope this helped you,

Chances are that there is the tiniest fray of one of the wires touching somewhere. Since you have already made a good repair with nuts and tape, feel the length of the cord for other bite marks where a puncture might short the cords. If you find such a site, **** the sheath lengthwise, tape the wires and replace them in the sheath, then tape the sheath closed.

The electrical cord has a short can it be cut and repaired

most of the time yes you could also try to put a new plug on the cord itself that could fix it otherwise i'd take it to a repair shop to have them change the cord for you sometimes it can be real difficult.

Problem starting

This can happen if you have an intermittent short in your cord. Try plugging it in and then wiggling the cord around where it goes into the body of the vacuum with the switch set to "on." (If you're not sure whether it's on or off, just click it back and forth occasionally.)
If the motor kicks on there's a short, which usually requires a cord replacement. If that's the case, it's a relatively simple fix for most dyson models.
If not, you could have a short in your switch or somewhere else in the electrical system of the machine.
