SOURCE: Snow Thrower does not self-propel

Did you check under the handle area, near the blower itself for a transmission lever? This will engage & disengage the transmission.

I would check your traction drive disc for wear or shredding. With low or little fuel in tank you can safely grab handle bars and lift machine up on it's auger housing. Then remove shield from under machine and inspect metal disc with rubber around it.If rubber looks worn you can get a replacement traction drive disc easily from most small engine repair shop's or go online and look for your nearest Ariens dealer.

the rod you mentioned is called linkage, yes it's posible, snow may have jammed up under the car and is stopping it from properly engageing, or the grinding could be internal in the transmition, jack the car up, put jack stands under the frame, block the tiers, and take a real good look at were the linckage conects to the tranny, good luck

SOURCE: My MTD 10hp auger will

Yes there are 2 belts one for the drive and one for the auger. If you remove the cover on top that is located between the engine and the auger housing you can check the belts. The auger belt has come off the pulley or is broken. Hope this helps you out. Best regards and good luck.

Replaced a broken auger control cable on my 536.881400 snow thrower, but now the auger engage lever cannot be fully pulled back.

possible that is the problem
see if you can move the end of the cable closer down the handle (control lever) to give it enough length
check how you fitted the cable and the spring may fit in a hole on the other side of where you put the cable end

Maintanance - How to purge Hydraulic drive system Published 01/13/2010 11:56 AM ' Updated 06/02/2015 02:52 PM
How do I purge the hydraulic system?
Hydrostatic transmissions use oil, under pressure, to provide movement for the tractor. The fluid is pressurized with a pump inside the transmission. If any air is in the fluid, the pump will try to pressurize air. This condition is known as cavitation, and is detrimental to the pump since it allows the pump top operate dry. When the pump cavitates it is not pressurizing any fluid, so the transmission is not able to provide the movement needed.
If your mower is new, or has been stored for a long period (longer than 2 months) the transmission needs to be purged before use. Also, if you experience loss of drive, or slower response, then the transmission should be purged first.
The following procedure will remove trapped air inside the transmission(s).
IMPORTANT: SHOULD YOUR TRANSMISSION REQUIRE REMOVAL FOR SERVICE OR REPLACEMENT, IT SHOULD BE PURGED AFTER REINSTALLATION BEFORE OPERATING THE TRACTOR.
Step 1- Place the rear of the mower safely onto jackstands on a level surface with engine off and parking brake set.

Step 2- Disengage transmission by placing freewheel control, located at the back of the frame, in the freewheeling position.

2a- Mowers with seperate pumps and wheel motors the freewheel is activated by turnign the bypass valves, one on each pump, two full turns.
The oil resevoir needs to be filled to the specifications listed in the owners manual before starting the purge procedure.
Step 3- Sitting in the operators seat(riders), start engine. After the engine is running, move throttle control to slow position. With motion control levers in neutral (N) position, slowly disengage clutch/brake pedal.
Step 4-Move motion control levers to full forward position and hold for five (5) seconds. Move levers to full reverse position and hold for five (5) seconds. Repeat this procedure three (3) times.

NOTE: During this procedure there may be some movement of the drive wheels, but they are not under load. The air is being removed from hydraulic drive system.

Step 5-Move motion control levers to neutral (N) position. Shutoff engine and set parking brake. Check and add oil as needed for units with an oil resevoir.

Step 6-Engage transmission by placing freewheel control into driving position, or by closing the bypass valves on the pumps.
Step 7-Sitting in the operators seat, start engine. After the engine is running, move throttle control to full speed. With motion control levers in neutral (N) position, slowly disengage clutch/brake pedal.

Step 8-Slowly move motion control levers forward, after the tractor moves approximately five (5) feet, slowly move motion control levers to reverse position.
After the mower moves approximately five (5) feet return the motion control levers to the neutral (N) position. Repeat this procedure with the motion control levers three (3) times.

Step 9-Your mower is now purged and now ready for normal operation. For further information or assistance, we recommend contacting your lo

The drive cable came off as i was engaging it & i can't figure how to replace it

TRACTION DRIVE CLUTCH CONTROL
CABLE
6.1. The drive control is on the right side of the handle bars

6.2. Stop engine and allow it to cool disconnect disconnect
the spark plug and ground it to the engine.

6.3. Confirm that the fuel level is low enough to prevent spillage through the gas cap vent with a plastic bag between the cap and the filler neck.

6.4. Carefully tip the snow thrower forward so it rests on the auger housing.

6.5. Mark the bracket to the frame as demonstrated in figure 5.2

6.6. Detach the z-fitting end of the cable from the engagement handle.

NOTE: The cable routes down to the cable guide pulley that is mounted on the drive cable adjustment bracket.

6.7. Remove the bottom access panel.

6.8. Detach the spring end from the friction wheel support bracket.

6.9. Examine the removed cable: If the cable failed because of something other than normal wear, identify and correct the cause before returning the snow thrower to service.

6.10. Install new cable by reversing the removal proceedure.

6.11. Run/test/adjust the tension on the traction drive
clutch control cable.

How do I get the left wheel of a Murray snow thrower to engaged when the traction lever is engaged?

You will find there is a shear pin that has broken in the wheel that will not engage. Not sure if its a pin or bolt. I had to replace one several years ago.

Snow thrower auger won't turn

One of the grip levers should engage a clutch that controls the augers. The other grip lever should engage a clutch to drive the wheels. Figure out which is which, and track the linkage from that lever down to the gearbox between the augers and the impeller. See if there's an adjustment you can make there.

If not... the gearbox may be damaged, possibly by hitting a solid object with hardened bolts in the place of your shear pins. ALWAYS use soft shear pins!

How to adjust the Toro 826 snow thrower

Belts will have spring tension on the idler pulleys.
Both traction and auger control cables will also have cable length adjustments to cause the travel of levers or idler pulleys to tighten belts. Adjustments are commonly located under the control panel/levers.
