SOURCE: differentiating omega model 2561.80 and a model 2531.80

kris, the 2561.80 is a mid-sized (36mm case width) quartz bond seamaster. its second hand will tick every second and is powered by a battery. the 2531.80 on the other hand is 41mm in width and it's automatic. no batteries needed. the second hand would be sweeping as oppose to the ticking quartz movement. the face would have a "chronograph" word on it.

Do new James Michael pocket watches come with a battery?

Yes, if it is of the battery type

Movement Type
The movement, or inner workings, of a watch are what make up the main timekeeping mechanism. This mechanism measures the passage of time and displays the current time and other information including date, day and month. These movements can be entirely mechanical, entirely electronic or a combination of the two.
Mechanical movements, such as hand wound or automatic watches require winding in order to run. An automatic watch uses the force of gravity to constantly wind itself. Automatic watches have a greater consistency of power and therefore can be more accurate.
An electronic watch employs the use of a tiny quartz crystal that vibrates in the presence of electricity. This type of watch is powered by a battery and their time is regulated by the tiny quartz crystal. This is why most electronic watches are also called quartz watches. Solar powered watches convert energy from light into electricity which is then stored in a rechargeable battery. These watches do not need to have the battery replaced as long as they are regularly exposed to a fairly strong light source.
Kinetic powered watches use a combination of mechanical and electronic elements. Usually a weight rotates with the motion of the wearer?s arm which turns a generator to supply power. It is similar to an automatic watch except that electrical power is generated by the mechanical motion.

My omega deville ladies prestige quartz is losing time. There is no second hand on the watch and the minute hand seems to tick every 10 secs or so. It has just had a new battery replaced by omega...

Yes. The minute hand ticking every 10 seconds is normal. Losing time is either battery or a movement malfunction. Only a trained watchmaker (or presumably Omega) can determine which. Take it back to Omega

Should i pull the crown to save battery if i store my quartz watch for a few months

I don't think storing a watch with the crown out accomplishes much. That I am aware of, pulling the crown out does not break the electrical connection between the battery and the watch. At least in looking at quartz movements, I don't see any electrical apparatus that insulates the crown in any way so that it could act as a switch. I think that in quartz watches that hack, pulling the crown out mechanically disengages or interferes with the drive train, but it doesn't stop the oscillator or stepper motor from running.
With quartz movements, at least those I have seen the internals of, (most ETA and ISA designs, some Rondas, a few Seikos), pulling the crown to the setting position does one of two things:
1) On better, jeweled movements - it breaks contact between the coil and battery, thus stopping the motor. The oscilator continues to be powered, but most of the current consumption is from the motor. These pulling the crown out does save battery life. Or,

2) On cheaper non-jeweled movements - it blocks the rotation of the second hand gear, and stalls the motor. These are observable by a "twitchy" second hand when the stem is out. This method actually kills the battery faster, as a stalled electric motor draws more current.

Changed power cell and watch still not running

Movements become "dry" over time and must be serviced.

Another common problem we see is that there is oil or battery acid (from a previously leaking battery) inhibiting proper connection between the contacts and the battery.

The quartz and the circuit itself may also go bad on a movement at any time.

If it is under warranty, you may send it back directly to Lucien Piccard.

I recommend you visit your local Certified Master Horologist for what is usually a free diagnostic. They can test the battery, the connection, the movement, and usually repair, service, or replace the movement for you. They will also generally give a free estimate.

DATE WONT CHANGE

If you have the crown in the first click position (date set position) the date set wheel is most likely damaged. Otherwise, if it does not change in 24 hours, it is the date wheel itself that is damaged.

This happens in all watches over time, as even quartz watches must technically be serviced every 3-5 years. 90% of manufacturers quote this as the standard service rate for quartz and mechanical watches.

If this watch has sentimental value, and you will want to contact a local Certified Master Horologist or Certified Quartz Technician about replacing the movement. Replacing Timex movements is generally more expensive than purchasing a new watch.

If the watch is still in warranty, you may consider contacting Timex about replacing the watch free of charge at: custserv@timex.com

It is best to go to a watchmaker for this issue. If the battery was improperly installed, it can damage the movement or contacts, which will mean the movement must be replaced. We see this issue often. Another common problem is that the oils from the installer's fingers may be causing a bad connection if the battery and the contacts are not properly cleaned. We would use the Pulse test to see if the watch has current, if so, the movement is bad mechanically, it must be replaced. If it has no current, we would check and clean all connections and replace the battery. If there is still no current (using Pulse diagnostic) then the movement is bad and it must be replaced.

What is the main internal assembly of the Casio forester watch called? Replacing the battery does not work.

mcdevito75 here, The Internal workings of all watches and clocks, Quartz and mechanical is called the movement. You may have a weak or even dead battery, even if the battery is new. If you"ve dropped your watch, got it water logged, you could have hurt the Quartz movement. It'll take special equiptment to check the Quartz movement to see if it"s burned out. I would try another battery or at least double check this batteries instalation in your watch. For more info, here is Casio"s contact number, 800-435-7732 9AM--5PM EST.

Can I use an ordinary button cell in a seiko kinetic

I have been trained by a Master watch maker and I have worked on many Seiko Kinetic watches. Yes the original watches came with a capacitor that is charged by your arm movement. But unfortunately, they seem to only last a few years. All replacements are now done with a Lithium Ion battery that is much better and lasts longer than the original capacitor. This is the correct solution and don't try to use a battery type that is used in other quartz watches.

4) Watchmakers lathe,
6) Microdrill,

Differentiating omega model 2561.80 and a model 2531.80

Kris,
The only way to find out what model of Omega you actually own is to open it.  This should have been done by whoever you already brought it to.  Omega only prints their model #'s on the movement inside the watch.  If you open the watch, look on the movement, you'll know what model you own.
