Question about Canon EOS Rebel XSi Digital Camera
I have a message on the display: "card write protected". what does that mean?
The SD cards have a physical lock on them, if you hold the card with the cut corner pointing away and to the right the lock will be on the top left edge. Make sure it is not in the locked position. Also if the card has not been formatted for the camera you may get that message

Read the Manual[a more comprehensive version is on the CD in PDF format] to cgheck out the applcation of card protection. Every camera system is different but will be documented in its manual

SOURCE: memory card is protected
SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

To format your card is a method of outputting data in a specific format. You can do that from the digital camera, in the menu look out for the Format option and use it, or you can plug it into a computer (through a card reader) and once it shows up in My Computer, right click on the drive letter and select format.
