I don't need a bicycle helmet and I don't need a third party dictating safety protocol...I figured it out though: tie together the two wires on the same side of the connector and tape up the end of the remaining wire (it doesn't connect to anything) Now I can get off and dump the leaves out of the bags without starting and stopping the mower every minute!"

When I let off brake, why does engine die?

probably more than likely it's a safety switch. i would first check the one under the seat. the mower will run as long as the clutch/brake is pressed down but will die if released because the safety switch that detects pressure of someone setting on the mower is either unplugged or has gone bad. try bypassing it just to see if that does it. repair or replace for safety reasons. hope this helps

Why does engine stop, when I take foot off brake pedal?

1 safety switch under seat. 1 on deck engage lever. 1 on brake. It sounds like the brake switch is working. its most likely your seat switch that is bad or out of adjustment. you can try bypassing switch by unplugging it from wires and run a piece of wire between the 2 contacts on the plug with the wires. If that works you need a new seat switch.

Tractor starts but die when you release the brake.

My name is Dane and I am going to try to help you solve your problem. I believe you have a problem in your safety switches. It should be your seat switch. If you look under the seat you'll see a switch which gets pressed when you sit in the seat. Make sure that the seat trips the switch as it should. Make sure the wiring connector fits snug on the switch and the wiring isn't damaged. You can also try to jump the 2 wires inside the connector on the wiring harness and see if it fixes the problem. If it does you have a bad switch. It is a safety hazard to operate the mower with the switch bypassed. Do not do it.
There are 2 more of these switches. One that goes to the deck PTO. and the other to the brake pedal. They are a bit harder to find and troubleshoot. Your brake switch seems to operate correctly. Most of these problems are seat switches...

I hope I've helped. If you found this information useful, please leave feedback as deserved. Thank you! Dane

Problem still exist, engine dies when brake relesases, blade engage, unplug safety switch under the seat

Switch under seat needs to be plugged in and make sure the pto lever for the blades is depressing the safety switch. If you are sitting on seat and seat switch is plugged in properly and it cuts off when brake is released then it is seat switch. It is about a $10.00 part; no big deal to replace.

Electrical problem

Strange as it may seem, if the mower dies when the brake is released, the problem is in the seat switch circuit. The safety circuits are designed to let you start the engine even if you're not in the seat, as long as the brake is on and PTO is off. While it might be the seat switch again, I'd also look at the the switch mounting or adjustment. If out of adjustment, it won't operate even though you sit in the seat. Also I think the associated wiring and connections to the seat switch may hold your problem.
If you're up for troubleshooting it yourself, try this:
Get an automotive test light (10 bucks or less). Clip the black lead to the negative battery terminal. Touch the pointed test probe to the positive battery terminal to confirm the tester is actually working. Lights up? OK, onward. Note that the pointed probe can be touched to a connection, but can also used to pierce through the insulation of a wire to test it.
Examine the wiring to the seat switch. One wire will go to a relay - a black module the size of an ice cube. Call that the "relay wire". The other should go to an area with several connections. Call that the "hot wire".
Engine off, nobody sitting in the seat. Turn the ignition on -- don't crank or start the engine, just turn the ignition switch to the first position. Probe into what we called the "hot wire". The test light should go on. If you can't get it to light, that wire or its associated connections is probably bad.
If the "hot wire" is, as they say, "hot", then probe the other wire to the switch -- the one we called the "relay wire". You'll have to operate the seat switch manually, or put tape over the button to keep it operated. The test light should light up, and if so, the seat switch and its connections are good. If not, then the seat switch or its connections are bad.
If everything's good so far, tape the seat switch in the activated position while you trace along that "relay wire" to where it connects to the relay. Perhaps the connection at the other end is loose, or the wire broken off inside the insulation. Use the probe to test along it and to test the relay terminal where it connects.
I hope this has been of help. If so, please rate my answer, thanks and good luck!

My john deere 214 won't start

The deck lift lever normally wont start lifting until you pull back at least half way.Ther are 2 sets of wires that go under the fender deck, one set goes to the seat switch and the other set goes to the neutral start switch next to the shift lever, just in front of the seat. The neutral start switch wires more than likley came loose when you pulled fender deck off.The micro switch is on the back side of plate that surrounds shift lever.

Riding mower dies when releasing brake

the seat switch is the problem. the switch itself could be bad, but usually theproblem is that the connector is just not plugged in all the way [by the way, trying to bypass the switch by inserting the wire doesn't work because there is a "switch" inside the connector to prevent you from doing just what you did]
