thanks for responding. we had already tried removing the battery, but i tried that again. still black screen. over the weekend we bought a viedo card and that made no difference. i dont know if this is related but the on/off botton will not turn the computer off. you have to unplug it to turn off. also the hard drive sounds and feels like its running but when you power up there are no beeps or noise from the computer. thanks again if anyone comes up with any more ideas.

Hi,
this will be the onboard VGA adaptor ( driver Missing Corrupt ) there are a couple of things to Try.
1:- remove power from Computer, Locate the Cmos battery ( small round battery that stores Bios Info ) remove battery for 10 seconds. replace. power up and boot.

2:- If your computer has an onboard graphics card Slot. AGP/Pci-express. add an additional card, and attempt to run on that card. to boot the computer, enabling you to re-install the corrupt/missing vga driver.

thankyou for using fixya.

Your thinking along the right lines, first of all check the laptop using an external monitor, if you get the same problems on an external monitor it is likely to be mainboard/GPU fault. If display is fine on an external monitor I would recommend taking the laptop apart and check the LCD cable is connected correctly as the first port of call. If that doesn't cure your issues I would look at replacing the LCD cable, then maybe the screen.

Yes it could especially when it does not work on another monitor.
Try another video card.

I've had my compaq presario cq61 for about 2-3 years. A while back it would occasionally have a kind of shaky/blinky screen but just in the past week it's like the screen has stopped working.

The problem may be due the graphics card or data cable or backlighting.

The data cable can be severed over time though opening and closing the display. This can be replaced.
The backlighting/inverter dies, some-times the windows desktop screen can be seen if one looks carefully. This can also be replaced.

Try connect your notebook to another computer's monitor via VGA or HDMI out.

If this works then the problem lies with your LCD screen.

Take care!

Laptop screen blank all white

Either your LCD Video Cable is not plugged in snuggly or the monitor is slowly going bad. The fact that you can see the images on an external monitors says your Video Graphics Card is working fine. You'll need to disassemble the laptop to get to the cables. Get a quote from your local computer shops, then try the guys at: http://www.generalsystemsconsulting.com Most times they will fix it and ship it back by Fedex or UPS cheaper than any quote you obtained including the shipping.

Black Screen Compaq Presario

Do you see the BIOS splash screen or anything?
Try booting into safe mode by pressing F* as soon as you power on the computer. If the monitor works, then it is a bad driver. Roll back to a previous restore point, boot to last known good coonfiguration. Last Known good configuration is available from the same as the safe mode screen.

If this is helpful, please comment and rate. Have any other questions, please let me know.

Black screen/flickering

try using an external monitor, if the problem doesn't happen on the external monitor then definitely the problem is with the LCD screen. Possible replacement required for the LCD panel.

Presario SR1810NX

what monitor.? name and model... vast exist... no all work.
test the monitor first on known good PC that is 1st 1st.
does the Monitor (its button) OSD screens work,, if not monitor is toasted (good power in) if monitor is 2001 relic, some have hidden inside, power saver clock (turn it off , using OSD screens)

no it's not your bios, like the www, myth loves to repeat, ad nausum
here is the correct mess order.
But BIOS screens are the 1st GOAL always,,,, your not there yet.

1: test the monitor first, on other PCs when sure its good move it to
the Presario SR1810NX (and a good known monitor)
2: turn the Presario SR1810NX , on, then see if all fans run
that means SKINS off, omg, the fans are packed in lint , omg2, the CPU fins on its heat sink are packed, bad. (a yearly event)
A CPU can overheat fast, if not able to stay cool.....
CPUs go slower or even halt if the they see massive heat rise.
(built in self preservation mode)

all fans must run and flow air, as the designer wanted. for sure.
then make sure the fan in the PSU runs, if yes, good. if not you lost 12vdc to the fan, bad PSU.

PC sounds to be working, yes?? what do you hear now? a key fact?
3:
push the CD/DVD eject button if it can not eject the PSU is dead.
there are more steps. lots more.
Even the HP service manual tells you how to test the PSU, read that?
